Removing tube and possibly ovary - Salpingo-oophorectomy

Hi everyone,

I’m just posting to see if anyone has any experience with having their tube and possible ovary removed?

I had a consultation today privately as I’m awaiting follow ups from the hospital I was in in October following a tubo-ovarian abscess.

I have been diagnosed with endo for about 18 months and had a lap last May to remove a large endometrioma on my right ovary and a smaller one on my left and excised all traces of endo which could be removed, I had some on bowel and my womb is stuck to my bowel but he left this due to the complexity and it not affecting me too badly.

I then underwent a round of ivf and had an egg collection and for whatever reason ended up with this infection. I am now left with a tubo-ovarian cyst which the consultant I saw today (who is an endo specialist) said he thinks will cause me problems due to blocked tube going forwards with fertility treatment and conceiving naturally due to the toxic nature of the contents of the fluid filling the tube. He also says he thinks my tube and ovary are likely fused together and if I went ahead with surgery to investigate that he would check to see if my left ovary was still healthy (which it should be) and then could potentially have to remove both the tube and ovary if stuck together and unable to just remove the tube.

My question is has anyone done this and then had further issues? Once home I started googling and read how it can lower fertility chances, even using ivf, and also can cause menopausal symptoms due to the decrease in hormones. Or anyone who has had this done and it been successful for them?

Thanks to anyone who has any information and takes the time to reply ✨

Hi there,

I had surgery two weeks ago to remove a 10cm endometrioma from my right ovary. I also had to have my right tube removed due to it being blocked (for at least two years).

The surgeon found endo on both my ovaries & excised this. He had warned that he may need to remove an ovary/ovaries if it was beyond repair but thankfully he didnt have to.

It’s early days as I’m still healing but just removing the tube doesnt seem to have been too bad. The surgeon had to leave a significant plaque behind as that was stuck to the back of my uterus & rectum & would have required a multi disciplinary team present to operate on.

Good luck with your op xx

Thanks so much for your reply. Hope you are recovering well!

This sounds very similar to me, and my op I had last year, womb stuck to bowel, pouch of Douglas obliterated and my surgeon did tell me I could potentially lose the ovary, but he managed to save it. But since then I had an abscess following a round of ivf which has left me in a bit of a mess!

Take care xx

I am so sorry to read of your suffering with endo. All I can say is that I did suffer with endo myself for a few years in my 30’s and all doctors could offer me was abalation etc…

My partner at the time took me to see a very experienced Chinese herbalist which I was very skeptical about. How could that help me and such serious problems if no pharmaceutical could do so? Well…plse believe me because it did! I saw her every 2 weeks for about three to four months and each time she adjusted my bag of herbs according to my symptoms and progress. We had to simmer them in a pan for quite a few hours and drink amount of liquid each day. Bit by steady bit my symtoms improved, deceased until I had NONE! Periods normal. End of. After herbal treatment stopped, my endo never came back.

If you think about it, if the root problem isn’t treated and the inbalance isn’t prioritised, then the endo will just keep causing problems no matter what bits you remove. I can only say I don’t know how, but it worked a miracle for me.

I would research to find the best Chinese herbalist in your area and if you can afford it give it a go…

I truly wish you all the very best…🙏🏼💕

Hi there, I had an emergency lap at the age of 17 caused by a burst endometrioma. They ended up having to remove my left ovary and tube and I was put on the pill and sent on my merry way (as was the norm in the 90s). Personally, I never had any menopause symptoms- the theory being that your remaining ovary would take the job of both ovaries.

I’m not going to sugar-coat the fact that your ovary reserve might degenerate, but you have to weigh up the risk posed from keeping the ovary/tube with its cyst (and your health) against your future fertility. Honestly? It’s like comparing a crappy situation with a sh!tty one but that’s endo for you.

thank you so much for your reply. And you are totally right, there’s not really a fully positive option here, but think that preserving or improving chances of conception are surely better than leaving a toxic environment there. X

I have had it done due to a cyst they though was cancer but was endometriosis.

I would not let anyone take my remaining one under no circumstances I’m 37 with no children x

I had both ovaries removed and tubes and cysts for suspected cancer but it was endo. I was already menopausal but it definitely made it worse. Internal dryness was one of my symptoms and hot flushes. I found taking sea buckthorn oil supplements helped the internal dryness and I have patches for the hot flushes.
