Can anyone who has tried this as part of their pain relief share their experience with amitriptyline please? I have just been prescribed this and hoping it will help with sleep if nothing else. I appreciate we’re all different but was interested to see how people got on with it, thanks in advance x

Hi, it will definitely help you sleep, you may find your tired on waking up still, if it can help sleep and you get rest away from pain I'd say definitely try it, I used to have it for depression and anxiety and it helped but I was really tired all day, like you say different people react different, you won't lose anything by trying it :) fingers crossed it works and helps you xxx

Thanks so much, I really think il fee better from getting a better sleep at night, last night I literally didn’t sleep a wink due to the pain. I’m actually off work this week too so it’s a good time to try it as I’m not up early. Hope you’re having a good day and thanks again for taking time to reply x

I was given amitriptyline for my legs & feet nerve pain which I have had for years and that I have just learnt is due to endometriosis, which I didn’t know I had. I take 10mg only, this helps me to sleep better, takes a bit of the pain away, not enough though, I am thinking I may increase the dose.

It for sure helps me to feel better in the morning, I use to wake up very early, with my mind tired and foggy, since I take them this doesn’t happen, I don’t feel sleepy either. I feel the tablets turn down two noches my central nerve system :-)

Hello, this really helped me with the pain management but I really struggled with the tiredness, I was taking it really early in the evening and still finding it difficult to get up for work, (but I do have chronic fatigue along with the endo) , my GP suggested I try nortriptyline, which has had the same effect with the pain management for my legs but much less sleepy making and so might be useful to be aware of if you find the amitriptyline tricky x

Hi. It’s helped me manage the pain and I take it on a night to help with the tiredness. Within an hour of taking it at 9pm it gets me into a good place for sleep and I go the whole night with a deep, satisfying sleep. It helps loads.

Hope you get on okay with it x x z

Hey, I am sorry you are struggling with pain and sleep! I took amitriptyline until around 8 months ago. It really helped me with pain and sleep. As others have said, I used to take it around an hour before I went to bed. One thing to consider is that you can’t just stop taking it, I was on 60mg/day when I started zoladex injections, which for me personally has been the best form of relief from my endo symptoms. I had to lower that dose slowly over 3-4 week period before I could stop taking it completely. I would still say imo that it is worth trying. I really hope it works for you x

Hello! I took Amitriptyline for a while but didn’t get on with it so well. I was so unbelievably tired and felt really dizzy all of the time. However, it totally reset me and even after stopping taking it (I only managed 2 weeks) I found I was able to sleep through the night and my pain reduced massively. I was waking up every night with severe pain before I took it and afterwards it would only happen occasionally. Everyone is totally different but worth a go for sure!

Thanks for replying guys, last night I slept so well which has been a blessing. I do have a bit groggy feeling this morning but it’s worth it for the decent sleep. Pain wise it’s too early to tell but getting to sleep at night has been great x

Great to hear that has already had an positive effect, as you said will take time to improve the pain, if you stop it, also takes a bit for the pain to come back, at least in my experience. Which dose do you take?

Just been started on one 10mg tablet at night

I found the Amitriptyline side effects tough to manage, but instead used the Nortriptyline for help with the depression and central core pain . After a while even on that found the 10mg dose overly numbing /“deadening “ emotionally which made it challenging to process pain management techniques which is a big help in overall getting back in charge of my pain responses. ( not to mention the severe constipation despite drinking a lot of water !!) So I dropped it gradually to 5mg which makes the day to day a pleasure and sleep restoring. It’s half the lowest advised dose but actually it works for me.

It’s so easy to normalise the high pain levels that come with this disease that this becomes a whole bag of tricks in itself. It creeps up on you and I found that it was a revelation that this was a a state that lots of people experience daily without juggling with pain, exhaustion etc as part of their package. I’d become hyper vigilant and very anxious to just coping. The meds have really helped recalibrate my sense of acceptable and normal. Alongside it I can now really benefit from the other self care things I do that before we’re a bit of a struggle to sustain. Give it time though it does really take a while to bed in

Thank you, yes gp said it really takes about 4-6 weeks to start to help with the pain x

my GP added a six week free pass to the Curable App which I’ve found mega useful.

It didn't help my pain at all and it made me hallucinate which was terrifying but I guess i had a very bad reaction. I have heard quite a few other people have had hallucinations with it so be prepared. I would never touch it again but that is only my personal experience.
