Hi everyone. I went to the hospital today after having experienced extreme cramps and bleeding for about 6 months and my GP referred me for a scan. They told me they found a cyst on my ovary 'likely endometriona' and I'm not really sure what this means, does this mean I have endometriosis? Could someone explain how endometriosis is actually diagnosed? She didn't give me many answers today and I feel totally overwhelmed.

my investigations started with an ultrasound after Also experiencing heavy periods, cramps ad other discomfort. The scan showed nothing other than a 4 cm endometrioma on my left ovary and that my uterine lining was too thick. The gyne said it was unlikely to me endo as nothing else was seen in the scan. But due to the size of the cyst I would need it removed. After being messed about about on nhs I went with my private health insurance. This gynea said it was likely I had endo as ultrasounds don’t always see it, but also too a good understanding of my symptoms and history. My subsequent lap showed stage 4, bladder, ovaries, POD, appendix and frozen pelvis. A further mri, showed more endo near recto sigmoid, adenomoysis and ‘extensive’ scarring that was 1cm thick. Please push for answers if yiu are experiencing pain. For Your info a consultation private is around £250, my lap was about 5k and the mri was £480 ish.I also had a hysterescopy with the lap and biopsy of womb. Hope this info helps.
yes, I’m afraid that it does imply that you have endometriosis. Historically the only way to prove you have endometriosis is by a laparoscopy and the surgeon either seeing patches of endometriosis or if they take a sample and do a biopsy of that tissue. However improvements in scanning have meant that more people are being diagnosed by a scan. Look at endometriosis.co.uk for more information.
Hallo there. Endometrioma are ovarian cysts that are filled with blood and signal endometriosis. Another person has posted a link, endometriosis-uk.org is also helpful.
