Mirena coil and back pain

Hi. Wondering what people’s experience is with the Mirena coil and it causing back pain? I’m 7 months in with the coil and it has stopped my periods and by month 5 had really helped with my endo pelvic pains but over the time I’ve experience lower back pain to the point I really pulled my back after just doing my normal every day jobs. On top of that the pelvic pain has returned. Many thanks for taking the time.

hi there, I too had back pain with the mirena. Lower back pain the whole time it was in. I perceived for 12 months but gave up. My consultant didn’t seem to think that the mirena was to blame but the pain disappeared after I had it out. I went on to have a hysterectomy and I was also suffering with Adenomyosis so I’m not sure if that was the cause.

Hi, thanks so much for replying. It does seem there is a lot of putting up with secondary symptoms in the hope of main symptoms being reduced or taken away completely. I hope your symptoms are greatly reduced after the op. My specialist (through ultrasound) thought I had adenomyosis but when I had a hysteroscopy the womb lining wasn’t thickened, suggesting no issues. I had back pain before in between trying other hormones which is why I really do think it is the coil but my options seem to be running out so hoping it will ultimately work out. All the best for your health in the future.

thank you! I’m pleased to say that I’m pain free now I’ve gotten rid of everything 😂 wish I’d have done it sooner! Have you tried yoga? I did find that it helped with the back pain x

What great news to hear you’re pain free! I have tried a bit of yoga and other gentle stretching exercises after seeing a pelvic physio but I have to be careful as apparently I have a really tight pelvic floor which seems to trigger the pain. I’ll keep on trying though as I don’t want back issues to get worse.

Had Mirena’s for 17 years. Back pain and pain down my legs was an Endo symptom I had in the last 4 years. I just had my second Lap and removal on Endo - waiting to have post op consult visit. Back and leg pain had reduced dramatically since 2nd Lap. I’ll have another Mirena in as they suit my body, manage bleeding, pain and other symptoms.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply. It really does help to hear other people’s experiences. I’m hoping that in the long run the coil will help. I’m not a million miles from the menopause, so who knows what the next few years will bring. All the very best to you.

Hi there! I have had the coil now for a little over a year. My periods have stopped too, but took a full year to do so. During that time I was pretty much pain free. The pain returned about 3 months ago. It isn’t anywhere near what it used to be. So I am holding out hope that it stays that way. Just wanted to let you know that you aren’t alone.

I have the lower back pain, and think it's just down to endo and adenomyosis .I have a mirena fitted too. It has stopped my bleeding and the really heavy periods I was getting. The pain is also more on one side than the other but when I talk to the consultant its possibly due to a lot of scar tissue after last lap. I do yoga and it really helps, so much so I don't take any meds (yet) despite severe endo. I'm also hanging on for the menopause...but managing for now.
