Period pain, hysterectomy yesterday

Hi ladies

I had a hysterectomy yesterday and I've had severe period pain since.

I have stage four endometriosis, I had my ovaries and tubes removed too. My bladder was heavily involved and I've not been able to pee since so have a catheter.

I just wondered those who had a hysterectomy, did you have period pain after? I am taking morphine but that's only taking the edge off. I'm so worried the pain isn't going to go.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks everyone

Abby

Hello, I haven't had a hysterectomy yet, but I would imagine it's quite normal to have period pain afterwards, as they would've disturbed everything during the procedure. Please try not to worry, it's very early days, just take it easy. Hopefully someone with experience of a hysterectomy will be able to reassure you ❤

I haven't had a hysterectomy but I did have very heavy excison surgery. IT's normal to feel very bad pain for a few weeks afterwards. I Think I had to take painkillers for 8 weeks although the pain got less and less strong. I think th eworst was the first week. A hysterectomy is a huge operation so your body will be all pulled around and cut inside. I would have thought your doctor should have talked to you about how you might feel.

Keep on with the strong painkillers and keep in touch with the doctor who did it. I would call the doctor and ask to speak to him/her it might reassure you. Hopefully it will ease off gently.

Try not to do too much but move around a bit. I could only walk form the bedroom to the kitchen for a few weeks. I'm sure ladies who have had a hysterectomy will leave you some info here. Hang in there the pain will become less strong.

Thank you. I thought the incission sites would hurt, hadn't even thought about period pain. Probably naive! Everything feels worse in hospital too doesn't it.

I found the worst pain the terrible frozen neck I had after the gas they use to inflate the abdomen. I can imagine you would not expect period pain because the womb is gone, but I guess it must hurt all around where it has been cut out. But it will get better, you'll probably feel a bit better when you get home. ANd I'm cretain it will all be worth it when you endo pain is gone. XX

Yes not being in hospital will be the best. Can't wait for a decent night's sleep

Poor you. Have always said hospital is the worst place when your sick 🤒, rubbish sleep, strange place, being poked and prodded and plenty of snoring when the staff aren’t waking you up at random hours. Drink plenty of water , try and move a bit and rest lots.

I am on week four after a full hysterectomy & removal of endo. Did they give you a spinal before surgery? That is meant to help with the pain? It is very normal to feel extremely beaten up after this type of surgery. Are you at home or in the hospital still? Xx

No, no spinal. I'm still in hospital hoping to go home later today. I just wasn't expecting period pain when that's what I wanted to get rid of!

How do you feel now, on week four?

I would say that might be why your pain is so bad. I had a spinal & it did help I had no pain whilst at the hospital. It's been a shock to my system for sure. I can say it gets better as the weeks go by. I do feel it's been a slower recovery than I was expecting. Rest & plenty of water truly does help. I hope they let you home today. You will feel better for being at home. 🥰 x

Hi My_adventures

It's totally normal to experience period-like pain afterwards but please do speak with your consultant if it feels unmanageable.

It would be worth keeping a day-by-day diary so you can keep track of any improvements, for example pain levels, medication taken and how you would rate your pain level afterward etc.

Everyone's recovery times are different but you've been through a big operation so it's important to let your body heal properly afterwards. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and make sure you're eating well to support the healing process.

Wishing you all the best with your recovery x

Hi there, I'm 5 weeks post hysterectomy op and yes I'm experiencing period like pains and have been since the op although I'm beginning to feel a lot less pain now. We are all different but I wouldn't expect too much so soon after surgery, it's taken a few weeks for my pain levels to reduce, your body needs time to heal and the pain will probably get worse before it gets better, that's what I found anyway. I can finally see light at the end of the tunnel though and I hope that's the case for you too soon enough. Have a speedy recovery and take it super easy. All the best. X
