Does anyone else suffer from rib pain, making it hard to breathe? I didn’t think the pain I have could get any worse but this is taking it to a whole new level 😢

Hi i hope you are okay. I get terrible pain in my ribs. It's at the bottom of my ribs but in the middle. It's excruciating at times. It can last a couple of hours sometimes days. It's a constant pain when i do get it. There's some foods that i can't because it makes it worse. I take lansoprazole and gaviscon. They don't really help much. I've been to the doctors so many times but all I get told is that it's a possibility that it could be the endo causing the pain. I hope you feel better soon. 💛

Thank you for your reply. Sorry to hear you experience it too. Having a really difficult day today. What foods have you found make it worse? I can’t imagine the lanzaprozole nor gaviscon do very much at all! X

I can't have any spicy, greasy or acidic foods. I have told my specialist several times about the pain but again i always get told it's the endo that's possibly spread. I have had a few endoscopy's which always show up nothing 😒. I give up now going to the doctors as they say there's nothing else they can do. Please do keep trying to get an appointment with your doctor. Good luck my lovely. 🤞💛

Hi mrsswinnydm

Sorry to hear you're suffering with rib pain, it sounds really awful. Please do check in with your GP if you are experiencing breathlessness. Sometimes we can put all of our symptoms down to endo, but it's important to discuss with a medical professional to be safe.

Endometriosis UK has a helpline available to you if you'd like to chat to someone who understands what you're going through. The rota is here: endometriosis-uk.org/helpline

Hope you can find something relaxing to distract yourself from the pain, like a relaxing bath or listening to music. Sending healing vibes your way 💛

Take care,

Claudia

Hi

Thank you so much for the reply. I did try to get an appointment today but was too late so I am going to try again in the morning. Thank you for the link, I will take a look and have a look around the site. I’m finding this pain quite difficult (not that the rest of the pain is easy but this is making it so much harder). I’ve also contacted the consultant’s office as this is definitely a step up.

Thank you again.

X

Endo the gift that keeps on giving !! I'm experiencing a pain in my rib area. I feel like my liver & stomach are swollen & get caught in my rib cage. Laying on my left side makes the right side it worse. Stood up I can feel it on my lower left rib cage side. it can feel like I'm leant against a metal bar, pushing into my lower ribcage. I had my galling gallbladder removed - twice. First time it was inflamed & stuck to my liver. That cud have been a mix of infection & endo being sticky. 3 surgeons tried to remove gallbladder but cudnt. A year later they tried again & succeeded removing it. However I'm guessing the scars r now adhesions causing pain. I have had over 25 gynae ops over the years leaving an array of scarring & adhesions. Once the whole abdominal wall was a mass of adhesions & removed as I guess I had a cats cradle of adhesions. I hope u get sorted out, it's exhausting fighting 24/7 for such a small increase in health & be pain free. Xh

25 gynae ops, that's unreal you have had to go through so many. You're exactly right about it being exhausting. I also find having to take he variety of tablets so disheartening too - they don't do anything, not really. I'm willing to try but just so fed up. Wish I could afford to go private, I fully get the waiting lists but it's frustrating to be waiting, waiting, waiting. What you said about which side you can lie on too, I found really interesting because that's where I currently am. And the description of the metal bar is exactly right!!! Thank you for replying to me, it's reassuring to know it isn't just me.

Yes it's probably endo in your diaphragm. In the past this was thought to be rare but now studies are showing between 50 and 80 percent of women who have endo in pelvis also have it in diaphragm. you can have it excised but you would need a really good surgeon.

mrsswinnydm in reply to Avourneen

50 - 80% I didn't realise the numbers had got so high. Only recently started researching this area of it and couldn't really find very much, but I'm always so glad to ask a question on here. Makes me feel like it isn't just me. I don't want anyone to feel this way but whilst that isn't realistic, at least we can all help each other out!

It’s a joy isn’t it ! As above really ensure it’s nothing else that needs immediate care.

As others have mentioned it can be the endo itself in the area …. or it can be referred pain from endo elsewhere in the pelvic cavity . So if you have lower bowel/bladder/ uterus endo and it’s pulling organs and ligaments out of alignment that can cause significant torsion and pressure on the ligament’s elsewhere like the diaphragm/ hip and that can affect the ability of the diaphragm to move properly. If the uterine ligaments are being pulled and rigid with spasm and adhesion it causes other ligaments to have to extend and remain over stretched to cope. I like to think of it as a tent with badly tightened guy ropes. The more torsion there is the more pain and abdo pressure there is.

I did try but no one seemed to think it was too urgent or anything to worry about...try telling the person who is finding it hard to breathe because of the pain. Still waiting for confirmation of endo, although it would be more surprising if it weren't there, adeno already diagnosed almost a year ago. Your description of it is one I'm going to use to explain how it feels, so thank you.

Hiya i’ve just turned 18 and i’m currently waiting to see a gynaecologist due to query endo… but will probably end up going private, i’ve been suffering since i was 16 and the past 4 months i’ve been in agony. not able to work, struggling to go to college for exams etc.

but i understand exactly what you mean, altho i pushed it aside and ignored it but i have been suffering with severe rib pain on top of everything else which has been causing me to suffer with shortness of breathe.

I'm so sorry to hear you've been experiencing it for so long and at a relatively young age, it must be really difficult for you. I've had a really difficult week with this rib pain...if I think back, it has started over the past few weeks / months but I've tried to ignore it but it's like it's decided, no you will acknowledge me now!

ging04 in reply to mrsswinnydm

Yes i totally get what you mean. You sort of push it aside as aches/pains and don’t pay attention to it but it continues to the point it doesn't allow you to ignore it :( hope you’re ok , look after yourself xx

Thank you, I hadn't considered costochondritis which I had some years ago...doesn't feel exactly the same though but maybe one to consider?

mrsswinnydm profile image
mrsswinnydm in reply to nikkimatt2019

It's awful isn't it...they're in such a rubbish position, witnessing their partner going through all this and not knowing what to do. My husband is very good at trying to keep me calm through it, but I know he worries...no one wants to hear their partner say they can't breathe properly.
