Hi, I have stage 4 endometriosis and It has been suggested that I have the coil fitted. I have heard nothing but bad things about having a coil. I was wondering if anyone else has any opinions on if a coil is bad or ok?

Hello,

I've had the coil for 2.5yrs and its been great. But the initial 3 months were awful more pain than my endo. But one settled its been great. I don't take painkillers my periods are only 1 day long, very light and totally manageable. And when I need to have it replaced I 100% will even with the possibility that I have those initial 3 months of pain again. As the long term benefits have made it for me the right choice.

Hi, many thanks for taking time to reply to me. It’s good to hear it does work. Just can’t bear the thought of having one when I’m in pain at the minute but maybe worth a go then x

Hello! I had a hormonal coil fitted about 17 months ago. Overall it has been a great choice for me - in fact, it has changed my life and made my pain and endo symptoms completely manageable. It wasn’t a smooth process though. I had almost continual spotting for about four months with occasional cramping every few days, although my periods all but stopped during that time, so the pain was slightly more regular but MUCH less severe. And after those first four months for me the spotting stopped, alongside the cramp pains. I now have a very light period for no more than one day a month with almost no pain. Amazing after the painful 10 day periods I used to suffer with before the coil fitting! I had never taken hormonal contraceptives before having the coil, and I did notice a change in my mood a little, especially over those first few months - I was a little more quick to cry and feel quite sad and angry! But that settled - I do feel quite ‘hormonal’ in the days leading up to my period (albeit only very light and brief!) but no more than I used to before the coil.

I have noticed my skin also still suffers a little on the build up to my period - again this was the same for me before I had the coil - so no better or worse for it.

Appreciate everyone’s experience is different, but I had read so many scary stories about awful side effects of the mirena coil and was quite worried before having mine - so I did want to share how it has helped me positively.

Wishing you all the best, whatever you decide to do!

I have stage 4 endo and had the mirena fitted during my laparoscopy. I was so so apprehensive because of all of the negative things I've heard, but I can honestly tell you its changed my life. I have pretty much zero pain now, and no blood during my "period". I can still tell im on a cycle due to my discharge changes and hormonal changes (spots, lethargic etc), but its been amazing. I think give it a chance and if its really awful then you could have it removed? I had a bit of pain with it the first couple of weeks but I think it was a combination of it settling in and post-op pain. But I know I'll get another one when this one expires!

I have stage 4 endo and I got the mirena coil fitted about 9 months ago. The fitting of the coil was awful. However I was told this is because I haven’t had any children.

Like the others have said it took many months for my coil to settle. With my endo I am in extreme pain when I bleed. With the coil I bled continuously for 70+ days. Which resulted in hospital stays & visits. However I think my reaction with the pain was not normal. It has now settled. Pain isn’t as continuous not is my bleed. I was told the coil would stop periods. I really hope this does eventually happen.

I think overall for a hormone treatment it has worked better than anything else and I have tried everything. So I would 100% give it a go but be aware of the settling time and that it won’t be an immediate fix, if only that existed!

I was on chemical menopause previous to the coil, therefore I know my body really struggles with any amount of estrogen, therefore my experience will probably be completely different to yours.

Wishing you all the best and hope you get sorted. It’s a horrible condition x

Hiya, I had the exact question to ask. but I think after reading the post I am now going to go ahead and see how it works for me. I am deeply scared as I csnt handle pain down there in general but I have no options at the moment as the pills didn't work for me due to my migraines. I had stage 4 endo, but had surgery in 2019 have been clear since but still getting the flare up here and there.
