Has anyone got any tips for leg pain?

JadeH92 profile image

I am unsure if its endometriosis or adenomyosis related but, over the last few weeks my leg pain has gotten soo much worse.

I suffer from the heaviness and dragging pains on and off but now it's like a cramping in my thighs as well.

Any tips or advice welcomed!

Thanks in advance

Hi I have adeno and endo too and I find that my tens machine helps. I also sometimes try and massage my legs or get someone else to do it, a bath also helps. Hope you start to feel better soon x

Thank you, I was actually thinking before I should try and find my TENs machine. I have spent most of the day in the bath! I have got some new CBD bath salts which smell nice but not sure if they actually do anything. Thank you soo much for your advice though, it is really appreciated 😘 xx

Essential oils are very good for pain relief. Day to day I add 50 drops of rosemary essential oil to 100ml of a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or jojoba oil. It's the most effective of the essential oils for pain - reduces inflammation too.

During periods, 40 drops of clary sage essential oil + 10 drops of black pepper essential oil can be very effective in 100ml of carrier oil. This combination is clinically proven for period pain.

Thank you, sorry for my ignorance but once you make up the ratios do you then just rub it on the area? If so how often? Thanks again x

Hi, that's not an ignorant question 😊. Yep, I massage it in to my legs and abdomen. See which combination works better for you. I tend to use as much as necessary, say it gives you 4 hours relief, then apply again. Just plucking a figure out of the air but I hope you see what I mean. As its massage oil ratio there's no need to worry, probably best to do a patch test first, to ensure you're not allergic/sensitive to it before applying everywhere xx

Yes that makes sense, thank you. I went on Amazon after you suggested it and bought a mixture of oils that all if not most should be here by tomorrow so thanks again for that. I'm really hoping it helps because I'm going insane and really want to be able to go back to work! x

I use castor oil on my legs! I massage it in to the painful area and usually put a layer of clingfilm over that and then use a heating pad/hot water bottle over the top to aid in absorption. It’s been helpful for me as I also get horrible leg pain during my period and find it hard to walk. Like the other ladies in the replies I would also recommend a TENS machine, it’s probably my favourite thing that I’ve bought in terms of endo pain management. If you’d like the links to the products I buy feel free to private message me. All the best xx

Thank you for your advice! I've never heard of castor oil for that use before so it is good to know. Like you my leg pain used to just be really bad during my period (it would be there not during my period too just not as bad) but since my last period it just hasn't let up and seems to be getting worse. Along with my cramps I've had to have more time off work because of it this week and it's driving me crazy. Thanks again for your reply, it's really appreciated! xx

A wheat bag helps me and I use it a lot. Also I ALWAYS sit with my legs up on a pouffe. It feels like it takes the pressure off your tummy. Hope these very simple tips could help you. Good luck xx

A heated wheat bag? I think I have one of those in the back of the wardrobe somewhere. I'll dig it out. I'm willing to try anything! As for sitting with my legs up, I 100% have done that this week 😂😂. I haven't lifted a finger, just gone from the bath to bed or lying on the couch feel so lazy but this week has really wiped me out. Thanks for your advice and thank you for taking the time to reply! xx

Yes I just keep reheating it when needed, mine is quite a good size so I lay it right down part of my leg and tummy as well. Also you're right to stay off your feet. You're NOT lazy! I've made myself worse by trying to push myself, thinking I'm being lazy. xx

Just bought a tens machine on Amazon and will be using it soon. Also I now use a hot water bottle or an electric heating pad as well as ibuprofen and I put me feet up and relax ( when possible). My leg pain is horrible when I get my period and it’s one of the first symptoms I had starting as a teenager and never knew what it was from. I was diagnosed with stage 4 endo about 7 years ago via lap. I find myself naturally massaging my own legs too. It’s usually the tops of my thighs.

Thank you for your advice! I hope your TENs machine gives you some relief. I usually avoid ibuprofen because it's not very good for you but needs must so I've just taken some and hopefully it will take the edge off until I can take some more Codeine. My last consultant said the leg pain is more linked to my adenomyosis but I know lots of women who just have endometriosis and still suffer from the horrific leg pain so it must be linked to both. Thanks again xx

That pain is horrible I have it as well even after period finished before Ovulation, sometimes I think I am gonna die from all this pain I have every single month at least 10-11 days. This cycle, My mom just did some techniq she learnt from refloxology foot massage and it helped very much. You or someone else massage with tumb from heels to toes! Repeat as many times as you want better to be with oils as ladies suggested below!

I didnt have an oil at a time and we tried with body lotion still helped!

Hope you feel better xo

What is TENS machine? Never heard of that before

Btw someone mentioned Advil! Yes that is the only thing reduces pain for me as well but there are two things abt Advil ( and Naproxen) I learned the hard way:First it messes up with my stomach very bad when I take it for several days

Second a Doc recently told me not to take Advil in days before Ovulation bcuz it disrupts the mechanism of Ovulation ( reduces inflamation which is needed for proper ovulation) and then there will be cysts remaining for month after which causes more pain in results!

So I take advil for my Period when I have to ( although disrupts bleeding as well) but not after for my endo/Adeno pains before Ovulation.

Just felt like share this as during many many years of my pain none of the doctors mentioned this before!

Yes I agree with you. And I’ve been told both Advil and ibuprofen are bad for me. Especially as related to fertility. But now since I’m past the baby stage I’m like “heck with it”. I do try to keep it to a minimum though so I dont hurt my stomach lining. I have thought about taking natural anti inflammatory like turmeric- have you tried this ever?

Bebe294 profile image
Bebe294 in reply to USgalwthendo

Yes I tried turmeric but it was almost 5 years ago and I had been trying multiple supplements and do not remember particular exp on turmeric but I remember I had much relief from period pains while I was on DIM. So actuallly tonight I bought it again with another supplement having Calcium D g and Astragalus .. etc. I hope this help as I had very bad pain today literally crying 😢.

Unfortunately I am not passed baby desire yet and did several IVF which resulted in Endometriosis and much more pain due to esterogen dominance!

I remember begore all ivf stuff I had only pain around period time but now it is there after period before Ovulation too which is not tolerable specially as I dont want to take NSIADs!

They ruin my stomach 😩😩

Thank you for your reply about supplements. I’m willing to try just about anything these days. I’m wary of birth control meds though I don’t want to make things worse in the hormone department. I never did IVF but a few close friends have and I know it can be physically and emotionally demanding. One of the friends has severe endo, pcos, and other issues and had twins via ivf at age 42. I think she had to go through 3 tries but it worked. And yes she had side effects too from the meds. Made her health worse. She didn’t care though when she held two beautiful babes in her arms. Healthy and now 9 years old! But yes it took a lot to get the great results. Sending positive vibes your way.

Thanks very much for encouraging words. I hope you get relief from pain too. I agree abt BCP and I dont think they help with endo pain much even Ive heard opposite. If you are open to supplements research on DIM. I read a research be done on that on endo patient and had a very good results on reducing endo masses plus the symptoms.Take care n good luck

I agree with all of the suggestions of a tens machine. Mine is sometimes the only thing that saves my sanity in-between and even with prescription medication pain relief. The one I have was an inexpensive one from Lloyds and has two wires, but can be used with one. This allows the option of using two or four pads - which can be great if you have to areas you want to apply it like your lower back and legs, for example. I buy replacement pads on Amazon in bulk (much cheaper) but not all brands are equal. Some stick better than others. I do suggest experimenting with readjusting the pads and trying different programs at different strengths. There is one program that works for me a lot better than any of the others and I find adjusting where the pads are even a tiny bit can sometimes make a huge difference. Dont leave the pads in when not in use. Clean your skin after. Keep on hand the following: calomine lotion and antihistamine lotion - just incase the pads irritate your skin. The calomine can sooth, but if it doesn't work the antihistamine cream (like you would use on a bug bite) can ease itchiness if need be (and even if you don't need it for the tens machine you will have it on hand in case of bug bites over the summer).

In addition to the tens machine I make a lot of use of my heat bags which I buy on Etsy from a seller that makes me washable covers for them. They are flaxseed (which I find better than wheat) and I get unscented ones due to severe scent allergies and sensitivities. The flaxseed does have a faint 'clean' scent the first handful or two of times you heat it but it has been mild enough not to both me. So, she makes different shapes and sizes and I favour the ones that are divided into sections so the insides stay evenly distributed regardless the position I put them in.

I saw someone mentioned using caster oil and heat. I'm not any sort of expert so do your own research, but I have read you shouldn't use heat with caster oil.

Iro of essential oils you have bought, do some safety reading please. There is risk of reactions including with medications you are taking and this can change so should be monitored as we can develop allergies. Also some are highly poisonous to animals such as cats (for example) so beware of handling them when you may have traces on you or letting them near anything the oil could have transferred onto. Anyhow, like anything you use, it is good to read up on proper use and any safety precautions you should take.

While not a direct relief of pain, I do find having a couple of playlists targeted for relaxation can help me to cope, especially when pain is so bad I can't concentrate on anything else to try and distract myself. Having some mindless short but timed games on your phone (dependant on what you enjoy - word games, puzzles, mariocart, ect) can help to distract in short bursts.

Like others have said, pushing yourself physically is not going to help. If you are up to it you might find a stretching or light yoga based on easing pain where it affects you most might help - or you might not. Some find it helpful while others don't. I'm not suggesting it will stop your pain in its tracks, just that some find it helps over all.

No two people are the same. What one finds a miraculous help other find do t help at all, but the only way to know what works for you is to try. I really hope you find the thing(s) that work best for you and bring you the maximum relief for you.
