Chocolate Cyst

Hi,

Hope everyone is well.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of chocolate cysts? I have the coil fitted and for the past few weeks I have had pain on my right side, I was referred for a urgent ultrasound to check if the coil was in the correct position and to check for infection but they found a 3.2 by 3cm chocolate cyst on my right ovary.

Many Thanks

Amber

Hi lovely, yes I have endometromas on my ovaries which are also known as chocolate cysts. I had one removed 10 years ago as it was giving me a lot of pain. It was around 6-7cm. It did help when it was removed but they can come back which in my case they did. I ended up on the pill to help the pain and to minimise break through bleeding between periods caused by the cysts. The best thing would be to get a referral to a gynae to talk about what can be done to help with your pain xx

Hi Jonesy84, thank you so much for replying. Oh no sorry to hear that they have come back. I’ve got an appointment with the specialist endometriosis team on 30th but mine is causing me horrendous pain :( xx

No problem! To be honest the first one I had removed was the worst the others thankfully didn’t give me much grief. I had a laparoscopy done to remove it and the pat when they had happened nosey and discovered the endometriosis. Good luck hun hope they can get it removed as when they start to give pain like that I believe they are best out xxx

Oh that’s reassuring. Have you had many? And do you know if they can go on there own? Thank you, this is the first time me having one and hoping I don’t get more!!xxx

I had the one removed and now I have 2 one on each ovary. I don’t believe they can go on their own it would either have to be removed or there will be certain meds I believe that could help to shrink it. I guess it depends on your age etc so these are the thing you will be able to talk to the gynae team about. Let me know how you go and hope the pain eases soon. I used to take ibuprofen and paracetamol together to help dampen the pain xx

Ouch that sounds painful. Thank you for your help. I’m hoping they will be able to help me. Thank you, I’ll try that combination and see how I get on. I will keep you updated☺️xx

Hi. How are you feeling? I had a chocolate cyst on my right ovary, the pain was awful and I did have some complications with it. I had it unsuccessfully drained and 9 months later had it successfully removed and as far as I’m aware it’s not returned, I certainly don’t have any pain if it has. I did find it took a lot to get some help, I wasn’t diagnosed with endometriosis and I was made to feel I was just being a wimp over a bit of a painful period even after we knee it was there and attached in a very difficult place my gp was no support for pain management. Did they locate the coil ok? Xx

Hi Tillyfloss, apart from some pain I’m good thank you. Hope you are well? Oh no, if you don’t mind me asking what sort of complications? Bet you were glad to finally get it sorted! Doctors can be so awful when they make you feel like that, they don’t understand the pain😢 have you been diagnosed with endometriosis? They did luckily, had so many issues with coil. Thank you for replying ☺️xx

Hi. Hope you are ok, what are you taking for the pain? Yes it was great to get to sorted and not be in pain. My complications are unusual so please don’t let it worry you, it’s a long story so I’ll try to do it as briefly as possible ,- was talking clomid for fertility.

- increasingly worse pain with every cycle until it was so bad I got admitted to a&e.

- after a lot of issues with doctors cancelling scans, lots results etc they finally did surgery.

- the chocolate cyst had a small rupture and had slowly been leaking it’s contents into my pelvis cavity submerging everything in its matter.

- this was when I was diagnosed with endometriosis.

- various hospital admissions for pain relief.

- 9 months later surgery revealed I had a full frozen pelvis , chocolate cyst was the size of a football and stage4 deep infiltrated endometriosis which was mostly dealt with.

We went on to successfully have a round of ivf after and I haven’t had much pain since, I am very sensitive to food with the bowel endo which occasionally flares up ( usually cake related 😁). Xx

Hi, I’m doing ok thank you, hope you are OK? At the moment paracetamol and ibuprofen but isn’t helping much. Oh god it sounds like you had an awful time of it, glad you got sorted and congratulations on your successful round of IVF! Shame about the cake🙈 thank you so much for sharing your experience xx

Hi Ambs2018! I hope you’re okay and your cyst isn’t causing you too much grief! I’ve also just found I’ve got a chocolate cyst of about 3cm. Have you had much advice on what to do next from your doctor? I had a phone call with a consultant yesterday and came away feeling more confused! X

Hi Pach101, Thank you I’m suffering a fair bit with mine! I hope you’re OK too and your cyst isn’t causing you too much grief? Nope, I had an ultrasound requested by my GP and they haven’t rung to discuss my results. I’ve got a gynae appointment on Tuesday. What did they say to you, if you don’t mind me asking?x

Oh no :( so sorry it’s causing you so much pain. Really hope the doctor can give you some solutions and relief. He said I needed to have another ultrasound in 10 weeks and then a repeat blood test for a CA125 level which was raised. He said that this was probably because of the cyst. I was a bit confused as my GP had said I had an endometrioma but the consultant said surgery would be needed to confirm. Out of interest, have you had an appendectomy? My cyst is in that side so I wondered if there was any correlation as my appendectomy was quite a nightmare! X

I’m really hoping so too its so miserable! 10 weeks is a long time with the unknown. That is strange, the lady who did my ultrasound said it was a chocolate cyst/endometrioma which is common with endometriosis so that’s weird that the consultant says that surgery would be needed to confirm. I have had my appendix removed but mine was removed as I had a stone blocking the entrance but my cyst is on that side too. Oh no sorry to hear it was a nightmare!x

So tough being a woman isn’t it!! Oh that’s interesting- the woman who did mine didn’t say anything and I was told to ring the GP that day but had to wait a week for the appointments. My GP said the exact same but the consultant said different- was very confusing. That’s strange about the appendix- that must have been painful with a stone! Mine burst so I wonder if that caused some damage. X

Oh good definitely! That’s ridiculous GP appointments can be lengthy wait, suppose not as long as hospital appointments. I can imagine it being confusing, was it a hospital appointment you already had? It was although don’t think they were happy about taking out a “healthy” appendix. I suppose it could be possible x
