Ovarian cyst/ endometrioma removal

I’ve got my first laparoscopy next month where I’ll be getting an ovarian cyst/ endometrioma removed. Has anyone been through this before and know what the recovery is like?

Hey,

Sorry to hear you’re going through this. I had the same thing last month and I know how worrying it can be.

I think recovery is really personal, I didn’t have too much pain with mine but it did take me a couple of weeks to feel close to being back to normal. I really struggled with how low I felt after, so try not to put too much pressure on yourself.

I would advise keeping on top of the prescription pain relief they give you when you are home, try and get plenty of rest, eat good food & some treats too (if you feel like it), hopefully you have someone who can help make hot water bottles & cups of peppermint tea because they really help too.

Hope it all goes well for you x

Thanks so much for your message, that is so helpful. I will make sure I stock up well on good foods and peppermint tea pre op. Did you have an appetite back after surgery or did that take a few days?

Glad I could help it some way. I didn’t have much of an appetite for a little while, but I made sure I ate small amounts of whatever I fancied.

Wishing you all the best. If you have any other questions or if I can help in anyway, feel free to give me a message. X

Not sure how much my experience may help since they didn't remove all the cysts in my case. They ended up having to do a biopsy so they didn't do the whole cleaning that was planned. But in my case I had a kidney stent put in and that was the worse bit. Without catheter and stents it would've been better. I also had injections to prevent blood cloth. And since I can't stand needles that wasn't pleasant.

Anyways, it depends a lot on the person and what they do during surgery. It does help to up your protein and antioxidants to help your body heal. And definitely no sugar and processed foods that makes your body work harder.

The overall recovery in my case was about a week to be able to walk around at home and care for myself. But it took a bit longer to be able to do longer walks outside.

The pain because of the gas was pretty uncomfortable the first week. I did take activated charcoal and it helps a lot. You do have to take it separate from food and meds. And it may increase constipation as well. So I was taking about 2 activated charcoal twice a day. I actually had less constipation after the laparoscopy than the usual. So I didn't take the laxatives they gave me and barely took the painkillers they gave me as well.

On the first couple of days sleeping was hard since I had to almost sleep sitting up and needed helps to move.

Do take entertainment to hospital so you don't get too bored. Internet at hospitals aren't very good either.

Good luck and everything will be ok and pass by in no time.

Thanks so much for your reply. It definitely sounds like recovery is different for each person and I will just need to take it easy and not put too much pressure on myself to get better. Since my diagnosis I’ve started to avoid processed foods , gluten , added sugar etc so I will definitely keep that up post op as you say. I’m also not good with needles so will not be looking forward to that part! Thanks so much for all the tips - I will look into the activated charcoal too that sounds like a great option, glad this helped you on your recovery x
