Scared ultrasound will be normal and my pain will be dismissed

So after months of battling with my GP surgery for a referral, I finally spoke to a gynaecologist 2 weeks ago. She has said she wants to do a pelvic and abdominal ultrasound which is booked in for next week. However she mentioned in my appointment that because I don’t have pain during sex (however I do after) “my uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries are probably fine”. At this point I don’t know what to think. I’m really worried that my ultrasound is going to come back normal and I’m going to be dismissed as making my symptoms up. She also mentioned that I’d already been treated because I have the mirena coil but that doesn’t change the fact that I have chronic pain that started almost 2 years after I had my coil inserted. Any advice to calm myself down would be greatly appreciated

Endometriosis most likely won't be found on an ultrasound as its hard to see, so more than likely it will come back normal. If anything use it to your advantage, tell them a normal result shows nothing outwardly wrong and you want a laparoscopy to "rule out" endometriosis. Failing that, ask for a second opinion. I was fobbed off by ny GP for years and when I asked for a second opinion I had a surgery date for the next week

Yeah I plan on taking the NICE guidelines with me to my next appointment because they say endometriosis can’t be ruled out by a normal ultrasound. My gynaecologist says she doesn’t want to do surgery but if scans are coming back normal and I’m not responding to typical first line treatments (hormonal contraception etc) then I’m really not sure what the other options would be.

I had a very similar experience I had to keep reminding them and firmly that the reason I’d had the mirena in the first place was because of problems and that if that’s one of the management strategies then it is surely worth investigating if I’m getting this level of symptoms with it!

I went into my ultrasound expecting them to find nothing and confident knowing that wouldn’t mean I didn’t have it or wasn’t entitled to further laparoscopic investigation as per the NICE guidelines. They ended up finding a cyst which really threw me but they’ll remove in my lap which is now booked for next week and may or may not be related to endo.

It’s completely understandable to be worried and flip flopping but you’re on the right track and armed with information on the NICE guidelines and have support on here xx

my ultrasound was completely clear but i pushed a little and now are going forward with laparoscopy. don’t worry at all, endometriosis doesn’t usually show up on ultrasounds, they just like to get them out of the way. good luck !!
