Hysterectomy during covid 😰😭

So I’m having a hysterectomy next week.

He’s removing everything except an ovary. Excising more of my Endometriosis. Removing my cervix as I also have Adenomyosis and hopefully unwebbing everything which is stuck together.

I’ve been waiting for over a year.

This will be my 3rd surgery for stage 4 Endometriosis.

My consultant is a BSGE specialist and is simply the best! He will be working alongside 2 other specialists because I’m a very complicated lady 😆😂

I’m petrified of this surgery because it’s during the height of the 2nd covid wave and my partner cannot be with me to hold my hand and calm my major anxiety before I go down, and when I come back etc.

I will be over an hour away from my family too 😞

Has anyone had surgery recently or during the first wave of covid? How was it, were the staff extra lovely and patient and sympathetic?

I’m so grateful that up until now 🤞🏻 it hasn’t been cancelled. I have my covid swab next week and my 3-5 bloods etc before surgery.

But I’m just panicking. Also I’m wondering what did you take with you? Do we have to take less now?

He’s told me I will be in 3 nights minimum.

Thank you 😘

I have just had my surgery and I'm in the ward.

They staff have been amazing from the minute I got here.

I have server anxiety and it was worse because my husband could not be with me.

The nurses have gone above and beyond they are supper friendly / supportive and attentive.

I could not ask for anymore.

I was so upset in recovery and they were amazing.

The pain management is amazing they have been checking me so often.

I have taken the names of all the staff so when I get discharged I can send a letter of recognition.

You can check your local hospital website and they will have a list of what you should pack (my hospital did)

Thank you so much!!

That’s great that you’ve had such a lovely experience that you are planning to write a letter of thanks to the staff members to recognise their hard work etc.

This fills me with hope.

I suffer really really really bad with anxiety and worry. So much so, I’m convinced I’m going to have a panic attack, send my blood pressure and heart rate through the roof and probably get my operation cancelled on the day when they do the before op checks before they take me down!! 😩😩

I wish you a speedy recovery. Can I ask if you had to wear a face mask?

When speaking to people you had to wear a face mask and down to surgery.

Mine is so comfortable I just left it on all the time to be honest and alot of people did the same but once on the ward you didn't have to in the hospital I went to.

Different trusts maybe have different rules so I would make sure you have a nice fitting one.

I hope it all goes well

If your bag/case does have an option to put a small travel type lock in it I would use this.

You sign your property into the staff care but it is not watched just put in a room and then moved to your ward when you are out of surgery or left in your room. I had a lock in my bag as it was my gym bag and they suggested I lock my bag as it had my medication and phone in.

Thanks for the extra tip. I’ll try and source a little padlock for it. Although I may just take a back pack to put my arrival clothes in, and my glasses case and some magazines in. I may leave my suitcase in the car with my partner and get him to wheel it up to ward entrance when I’m back on the ward to save the anxieties of having my stuff lost or stolen.

I’m panicking about everything. My anxiety is through the roof x

Hi I was in hospital last month for an operation and stayed in. They are constantly cleaning the floors and work surfaces, the ward I was in every second bay was empty. You wear a mask to go to the toilet, to go down to theatre and only remove it when you are in your bay.

I signed a form to say I may contract Covid but I guess that is to cover the NHS.

I really wouldn’t worry, I didn’t even think of Covid when I went in as I was so engrossed with getting my surgery.

The nurses and doctors are all wonderful and keep their distance apart from when they have to do your observation checks etc ..... I am sure you will be fine 💕you are allowed for a family member to drop you off at the hospital door but they must not enter, they can call the ward to see when you are out of surgery and remember to take your mobile phone with you too. Hope that helps a little x

Mine is the 24th understand completely how you feel. My worst fear is them cancelling, the secretary left a message and my breathing stopped until she said have to self isolate for seven days before 🤦‍♀️. My pre op is six days before so I’ll check with them tomorrow if they want to make it sooner.

Planning on taking change of clothes and several pairs underwear and pads as I’ve read you can bleed after. Phone/charger, book, magazine, snacks just in case appetite is suddenly improved.

I hope everything goes as planned in the run up, sounds like you are in good hands.

Hope you don’t mind me asking, why are they leaving an ovary?

Hello, I hope everything goes well with your surgery.

I believe he’s leaving my only good ones because I’m only young and it’s more beneficial to leave me with one than to remove everything.

I’d much rather he removed everything to save later removal but he’s a specialist and I trust his reasons as he knows more than I do.

But I did query this myself too.

I’m taking nighties as I know my tummy hurt after my previous endo surgeries so I imagine this will be the same, so lots of big panties too. Then my phone, charger, toiletries. Comfy clothes for coming home. A book and magazines. So basically the same.

I just can’t shift this anxiety 😞

I’d imagine it’s to protect your bones as much as possible, can understand why.

Everything you’re thinking is natural, no one wants this, but should bring relief. It’s not easy and in the day I’ll be a wreck I’m sure 🥺🙂

I’ve bought forward pre op, not something they’d thought of.

Here if you want to chat 🙂

Thank you Moon ❤️

Are you having a hysterectomy too?

It would be lovely to keep in touch. I can’t remember if we can private message on here, I used to use this a lot when I first got diagnosed when I was full of questions but deleted all my posts and my account.

That’s good news about bringing your appointment forward. I think sometimes they’re just too busy to check other appointments to check if it makes sense or not.

Happy to chat 😀, you can pm on this. If you click on the name it’ll come up. I’ll send you one.

I’ve got the lot coming out, with hopefully every scrap of endo.

Hi, I had surgery on Friday last week. I like you was absolutely petrified.

The staff were wonderful, they would make jokes and make me laugh. They were very understanding and kind. It was hard not being able to have my husband with me and I had to be brave walking into the hospital and down to theatre. I was sacred but everything went well.

I'm recovering well.

I would suggest asking if when you speak with your consultant you can call your partner and have him on loud speaker, before your op and definitely after. I didnt remember much about what he told me and forgot to ask loads of questions.

The staff all wore masks so I didn't need to as I had my own room, only when in the corridors. I took my own but they wanted me to wear a surgical one.

My surgery had to be cancelled on the Monday at one hospital, and they very kindly moved me to a private hospital with the same surgeon. I was am grateful!!

Praying that yours will go ahead too and that everything will go well. Praying for strength and healing for you Kat.

Hi Autumn,

Thanks for the reply.

You make a really good point about asking if I can call my partner when the consultant tells me what he did etc because you’re right, I have always been so out of it that I’ve hardly remembered anything that they’ve told me. I’ve wrote that down, so thank you!!

I’m pleased everything went well for your surgery and that healing is going well. It sounds like you had a pleasant hospital stay which fills me with hope. So thank you for being honest.

I’m still a nervous wreck though. I’m now not sleeping through worry 😞

I spoke with my consultants secretary and she said they are taking it week by week so I shall know more next week, so fingers crossed I don’t get cancelled 🤞🏻🤞🏻

I can feel the anxiety your under. Please do breathing exercises. Just for your mental health. I've had my hysterectomy cancelled 3 times and due to have it in January if I can hold out till then I've tried to do exercises and breathing techniques just to build my strength mentally and physically. Invest in a pair of headphones too to drown everything out and for you to have your own moment.

I don't have family or friends to help me so I'm trying to prepare everything before I have the op but I will be holding your hand like all the rest of us women. You will have a circle of warmth around you

Kat_86 in reply to Limena

Thank you Limena. I’m actually pretty good at breathing exercises already and meditation so I’m planning on remembering to use my techniques but in that moment of sheer panic and anxiety I forget everything I know and just crumble! 😞

I’m sorry to hear that you are doing this alone. Planning is the key, and it sounds like you are very prepared, it must have been frustrating for you to have experienced so many cancellations too. It’s awful isn’t it.

I spoke with the secretary this morning and she says they are taking it week by week so I should know more next week. Which doesn’t really help as my operation is next week.

But what will be will be. Everything happens for a reason.

Much love ❤️

Good luck.

You’ll be fine.

You’re a woman. With endo.

You’re already strong.

And now will get stronger.
