Just wanting to ask if anyone has experience of the Mirena and it stopping periods? How long did that take for you? Did you take the coil out instead?
I’ve had once since Dec 2019 and was told it usually stops them by about the sixth month mark but I’ve just had significantly more clots and fairly heavy flows each month with spotting in between. I’m now a week late on my period (I have a 34 avg cycle), no real PMS symptoms that I get like clockwork and I’m not sure if I’m getting my hopes up! For context, I was due to see my specialist next month with a view to starting a mini pill like Millinette alongside keeping the coil in as he thought it could be too low a dose being released by the coil itself but now I am left wondering what to do...
I’m definitely not pregnant as I took a test to rule it out. Hopefully this is the start of a period free few years!!

I’ve experience for me it was nearly a year and then they stopped completely for the length it’s meant to be in situ. It was bliss!
This time around I’m a year and still bleeding heavily exhausted and was also on a mini POP do help with the periods prolonged and extremely heavy. I’ve since come off the POP as it’s not really helped. I’m now on different medication to stop my period completely as quite frankly I need a break as I’ve been running on empty. Currently waiting bloods and referral for scan to see what’s going on internally.
Hey it took me 3 months to go to where I just spotted every 28 days and around 6 months to stop the periods. Still has twinges and the odd spot but so much better. Until 3 and half years in situ when I started to spot every 28 days which is whats happening now but they won't change till the 5 year point.
It has definitely made a difference to my life and I am grateful but I think I need the boost of a new one.
I cant have anything else.
Few different stories here isn't there but that just goes to show one size does not fit all.
When I had Mirena, my periods never completely stopped but they did get lighter after the first several months. I ended up having my coil removed after 3 years as it wasn’t really helping my pain anymore, but I did have about 18 months of minimal pain and light periods. My doctor said that the Mirena probably wasn’t enough hormones for me either - they eventually tried norethindrone (similar to norethisterone) but it took a really high dose to completely stop the bleeding for me and then the side effects were awful so I’m currently not on any hormones (feeling okay so far; I’m using a hefty combination of alternative medicines).
Maybe try giving it one more month? I hope it works for you and you find some relief.
