Sciatica or Endo??

Has anyone had experience of crippling hip and buttock pain? Doctors have diagnosed me with ‘sciatica’ (I also have a mild disc herniation at L5/S1) which should get better with time but a year on I’m in debilitating pain every day, worsen not improving.

Is it possible to have endometriosis on or around the sciatic nerve? If so has anyone had treatment for this?

Thank you

Morning I suffer with sciatica with flare ups which seem to be every couple of weeks unfortunately I haven't found anything that takes the pain away but I do try yoga and also standing and rollong a tennis ball under my foot in the arch to relieve the pain for a short while

I get pain, although not crippling, around my hips and it’s as if I can’t use them properly. All across my lower back, bum, hips almost seize up and don’t want to move when my endo is bad or time of the month. I’ve never mentioned it before as it’s hard to realise what’s always happened isn’t ‘normal’. I grew up thinking throwing up from pain was what having a period was all about so ALL the other symptoms just seem the norm but I guess feeling like I can’t move my hips isn’t normal. It’s especially frustrating as I’m a TKD instructor!

Hi there! I’ve had sciatica since 2017 on & off until September 2018 then it became a constant pain in buttock, leg, foot & hip. I had my first laparoscopy in feb 2019 which diagnosed endometriosis but the specialist surgeon I was meant to have was called to another so had laser treatment. I stopped working in October 2018 and still not retuned. I’m still in agonising pain with sciatic pain & endo pain. I’ve seen many specialists regarding sciatica and apart from minor disc bulges l5 s1 they’ve found nothing! I’m convinced it’s the endo causing sciatic pain and most professionals now agree. I’m booked in for excision laparoscopy at end of August and just praying it works. If you want to talk more I’m happy too. You’re the first person to have same issues as me!

Hi, I started to get sciatic pain down my leg about 5 years ago, went to see various different people, my MRI on my back came up clear, I had physio, I was told I had weak glute muscles and needed to build them up. I began to have some sharp nerve pain in my foot. I had to beg for an MRI on my hip as it felt that is where the pain was from not my back. I was in a varying levels of pain every day, at times unbearable pain. I also suffered from ver bad period pains too. Then I noticed that I could not lift my foot up and gradually over a year it got worse and I developed foot drop, I am unable to lift my foot or move my big toe now, I have numbness of top of foot and side of leg. My whole leg feels nervey and funny often painful, also getting bad cramps in my leg.

I was sent to a specialist, had more mri, PET scan, I had muscle wastage in my glutes and was told there was a mass by the nerve, this had not been spotted before. I had enlarged nerve roots too.

It was a mystery as to why I had the foot drop, I was sent to RNOH, I then had a biopsy of the mass, ( taken after period) it was inconclusive. They tried again (just before my period was due) and only this week it has been confirmed as endometriosis , it had travelled down the nerve.

I feel relieved in some ways after 5 years I know the cause and can get some treatment. I have been told it is very rare for this to happen. I feel I must have endometriosis other places which is causing the severe period pain. I am final being referred to a gyno. If anyone has the same it would be great to chat as it’s so rare it’s quite scary. Also to find out what treatments have / haven’t worked.

I think this is often overlooked, it was actually my sister who did some research online to find a case with very similar symptoms to mine that I made the link and that endo could actually get into the nerve.

The biopsy proved that this is what was causing all the pain and the foot drop.

Endo on the sciatic nerve is rare but bum and leg pain are classic symptoms of endo affecting the uterosacral ligaments which are the most common site for endo, especially when deep. It usually affects the left more than the right.

It’s been on my left side and this must be the issue! Thanks for this info

Hello,

Hope you are doing well. Just wanted to share my experience with you. I also was diagnosed with sciatica and had severe pain in my right side, hip, buttocks & down my right pain. I went to physical therapy & chiropractor. The physical therapist actually helped a lot (I was not optimistic). Used a lot of electrotherapy on my right side because apparently there was a muscle squeezing on the nerve is what I was told. I also have a long history with endometriosis and have right sided pain with that... looking back I think I was always leaning that direction trying to relieve the Endo pain and caused the muscle issue. I try to be aware of my posture because I know I hunch a lot to try to relieve the pain. I no longer have the nerve pain but have a lot of ongoing Endo pain. I hope this helps you some. I would try physical therapy, even tho I was skeptical.
