So after months of pain and period problems I finally went to the doctor. She suspects fibroids or endometriosis.
She referred me on for a transvaginal ultrasound and after 4 months of waiting my appointment has come through.
I've got the scan tomorrow morning and I'm absolutely terrified. Since the wait time has been so long my periods and pain have gotten worse and I've got myself in a right state worried about what it could be.
Has anyone else here had a transvaginal ultrasound? If so how long did it take to get the results? I've had no sleep for weeks now worrying and I just want to know what it is I'm dealing with 😟

In my experience normally take a couple of weeks for the results, but it does vary across the country. But be aware that endometriosis generally doesn't show up on scans. So even if it is clear it does not mean you don't have endo, and once you have your results no matter the result of the scan push to be referred to a gynecologist who has a specialist interest in endo.
The thought of the ultrasound is, in my experience, far worse than the actual experience of it. I was terrified as well but was very lucky that the lady doing it was very good at making me feel comfortable. I’m lucky that I have private cover so if my consultant had been available I’d have been able to get the results the following day.
It took me forever to pluck up the courage just to go to the GP in the first instance. I’ve now had the ultrasound and went for an MRI today. The ultrasound found some fibroids but as she couldn’t find my ovaries that’s why I was sent for the MRI and to see if there was any evidence of endometriosis.
You’re doing the right thing and you’re in the system, you’re nearer now to having an answer than you were before.
Hi I had a transvaginal ultrasound on Monday I like you was scared but it wasn’t no where near as bad as I expected and didn’t hurt in the slightest. Mine lasted around 10 minutes but she was having trouble finding my right ovary. I got my results yesterday ( Tuesday) at an appointment with my gynae.
I have had one before and it’s really not that bad so please do not worry. The lady doing the scan was very understanding and kind.
I was lucky that she actually showed me the image on the screen before I left and told me I had a fibroid that could be the reason for my problems.
I would certainly ask her if they found anything, although they are not a specialist they know what they are looking at and could at least give you basic information.
I had endo and a massive fibroid that was causing me my issues... the endometriosis was only diagnosed when I had my lap 3 weeks ago to remove it all and the nasty fibroid.
Had loads of them - where I come from (Israel) the system is different and you don’t need a referral to go to a gyne, who most times would also perform a vaginal US. It’s just a stick they put a condom on and here in the UK they’re always really good about saying what they’re about to do. It might hurt a little if they rummage around to try to see better in areas that are already sensitive/painful but you can tell them if it does hurt.
Bear in mind that they might not find anything in the scan, either because it’s well hidden or because the technician isn’t an endo specialist technician... it still won’t mean you don’t have endo.
I have suffered with pain on and off since 2018, I have had ultrasounds, ct scans the transvaginal ultrasound isnt as bad as it sounds. It's just a long plastic rod with a camera incerted into the vagina when moved to either side can see the ovaries clearly. It's not even as uncomfortable as a smear I thought. Please dont worry if it will give you some answers and a diagnosis then it is all worth it. Good luck x
Well, just got back. An interesting experience to say the least. Turns out they wanted to do an external ultrasound. Whole appointment was very rushed and quite bizarre. Didn't even give me a tissue to wipe the gel off afterwards. She laughed and said no when I asked if she could see fibroids. So apparently it's not that! Hurt like a mother having it done. In fairness though she was pressing very very hard. Results in a week apparently. Got a smear at my GPs next Wednesday though so hopefully I can ask the nurse in person if the results are back.
