Pelvic exam

Hi all

I have my first pelvic exam tomorrow and to say I’m anxious about it is an understatement! I don’t cope well with smear tests and I’m worried this will be similar

Can anyone share their experience of pelvic exams? Really just want to know how painful they are and how long they take!

Always find it reassuring hearing other people’s experiences

Thanks

I don’t think I can really reassure you as I hated mine. The only thing that I kept in mind is it won’t last forever and the nurse who was with me was very reassuring. The consultant examining me was thorough and knew what he had to do. I simply had to try and relax. Just take deep breaths and tell the nurse your fears, I’m sure you will be well looked after.

Thanks for replying! I keep trying to tell myself that it will be over before I know it but just keep thinking about the pain more than anything! Thank you!

It is very similar to a smear test but they might also use their fingers to see if you have pain or tenderness anywhere. Not going to lie, it’s not fun! There should be a nurse up at your head to chat to you and keep you calm. I always end up laughing because it’s better than crying, but it’ll last just a few minutes and afterwards you’ll be fine.

So, I'm a fainter! So all procedures are not fun for me. The best thing I can recommend is trying to wiggle your toes and fingers in unison, or alternating, or making a pattern. I tap my fingers to my palm one at a time, then do two taps, wiggle my toes twice etc. It takes your mind off what else is happening.

Also, if it hurts that's normal, but tell them because then they can tell you how amazing you are for the rest of the appointment - especially if you don't faint!!

Thanks for replies! Thankfully it was over nice and quickly and wasn’t as bad as I had anticipated 🙈
