Hey everyone I'm due to have a colonoscopy soon I have had a sigmoidoscopy before and it went horrible wrong and I was in so much pain I couldn't even speak or breath in the gas and air!!

So I'm already panicking as last time they stopped after 2 mins as I was in too much pain. This time they are going to sedate me and give me an IV which is a little more reassuring but I'm wondering I had an enema last time and that was agonising my insides felt like they were on fire and I was shaking crying for a good 30 mins this time I am having bowel prep should I expect to feel like this again? Did anyone else feel like their insides were literally burning when they had it done ?

Hibya sounds like

You had a bad time I had a colonoscopy last year before they diagnosed me

With endo , the bowel prep I was dreading because my ibs is so bad but it actually wasn’t that bad !!

It’s not as bad as I thought just stay at home

That day get loads of lukazade in and water I didn’t have the best time having it but my bowel twisted while having it so that was not present to say the lest I was Sedated but not much , I think everyone is different it depends on your bowel and how it reacts your be fine xx

I have been put on a 2 week referral for a colonoscopy and I am so anxious about it!

(Warning... incoming TMI!)

My back passage has been so painful for the last few weeks, the thought of opening my bowels has been making me feel sick! My gp did a rectal exam yesterday and I couldn’t tolerate that and had to tell her to stop, I started shaking and crying as it hurt so much, but she couldn’t feel any reason why I was in so much pain.

so I’m so worried about how I’m going to tolerate the flush out before hand and then getting a camera up there!!!

Hi Rach1701,

Im so sorry to hear you had such a horrid experience with the flexi sigmoidoscopy. I had a colonoscopy last Aug / Sept. The bowel prep isn't pleasant, mostly because of the horrid drink you have to take, but not nearly as bad as I was thinking... The actual pooping side wasn't too bad for me, I found the taste of the drink far worse because you have to drink so much in such a short time (2L in 2 hrs for the bowel prep I had, but 2 glasses every 30 mins for consistency). Prepare with some cool wet wipes as that will keep your anus from going raw, also apply a barrier cream before you get started such as sudocrem. The actual procedure was fine as I had the twilight anaesthesia.... It was a lovely sleep actually! I thoroughly enjoyed the nap lol

So, when I recently was told I'd need a flexi sigmoidoscopy with fleet enema I was relieved to not have to have the bowel prep again.... That bloody enema was by far one of the most excruciating things I have ever experienced. I was not expecting it to be so painful, as soon as it was administered by bowels went haywire and I was in tears waiting for my 15 minutes to be up so that I could relieve myself. Again, I was given a twilight anaesthetic prior to the procedure. I have endo inside my rectum and so I bleed a lot, I was getting my sigmoidoscopy so that my surgeon could map where in my rectum the endo is for my bowel resection coming up...

If you are definitely getting anaesthesia for your colonoscopy, you should not have any discomfort or pain during the procedure itself. If it were me, I'd be excited about the sleep haha! I think the enema may force the colon to go into spasms and that's why it was so painful, because apart from a sore bottom from overwiping I don't remember the bowel prep being physically painful on the way out.

Good luck!

Hi ..I was terrified about having a colonising back in January..The worrying about it set my anxiety through the roof ..However ...I found the whole experience from when I arrived at the hospital to when I left absolutely fine - The staff were very friendly and understanding and did their best to make me feel at ease..I had sedation and was awake throughout, but found the procedure pain free and just a few seconds of discomfort when passing camera round the bends ..It was over in no time and I'll be honest - I'd rather have that than go the dentist!..The only unpleasant part was a very sore bottom the night before due to running to the toilet alk night from the Moviprep...Also I recommend drinking that through a straw and after each drink, which I had every half hour then drink plenty of Lucozade..I also had a drink of Marmite in hot water, which was lovely and savoury when I felt hungry ....Overall I'd say it was absolutely fine .. Try to relax and think positive thoughts of how you'll be on your way home before you know it ..Good luck and let us know how you get on.
