I have just read that a gluten-free diet can help with the symptoms of endometriosis? Does anyone know how true this is?

Thanks xxx

Hi,

Am cheating a bit and just copied my reply to another post:

I'm also looking at diet changes, as I tried for many years to find links to bowel issues but it seemed so random at times and what would effect me one day wouldn't the next. Anything too wheaty or with lots of fibre in it definitely doesn't help my bowel (contrary to various docs advice about upping my fibre when I was misdiagnosed with IBS for years) Dr Tamer Seckin, leading American surgeon, has a chapter on nutrition in his book The Doctor Will See You Now. He suggests cutting down on or cutting out inflammatory foods - white sugar, dairy products, trans fats, deep fried food, processed foods, red meat and alcohol. And adding anti inflammatory foods into your diet. It can seem like a real mountain to climb can't it, so I'm working on reducing diary and gluten as starters and adding in the anti inflammatory foods. Elsewhere I've seen that there are foods which contain estrogen and these are to be avoided too if poss. Best of luck and I will be thinking of you as I attempt to get on top of this too!

Hi, the answer is that it might, but it might not... if you are intolerant to gluten you need to have it checked out properly before going on a gluten free diet to rule out Coeliacs as it's important that that is monitored. However, once that has been ruled out, if you are intolerant to gluten then yes, removing it from your diet will reduce your body's levels of inflammation which could possibly, in turn, reduce the inflammation and pain associated with endo a bit. It won't help if you aren't intolerant to gluten. It also isn't a guarantee if you are, my daughter feels generally better since removing gluten and her overall pain levels are much reduced but she still has cripplingly painful periods.
