Hot water bottle burns

Hi guys,

Like many of you, I use hot water bottles almost constantly to manage my pain. Last night, my partner noticed some red, spidery patterns on my inner thighs. Apparently this is a condition called Erythema Ab Igne. Any else have this?

I'm feeling very depressed and upset to be honest. I feel like I've reshaped so much of my life to accommodate this awful condition, and now one of the few things that brings me comfort is apparently also the enemy.

Hi Sarah I get this on my stomach and arms, even when I have a cover over my bottle. I don’t think it does any damage and it goes away quickly. Try not to worry x

I have this from my hot water bottle too, very red strange patterns on my stomach and thighs but they go away after about 12-24 hours without using heat on your skin. Try not to worry but just don't keep heat directly on skin for prolonged periods of time :) xx

Came across this on Nancy’s Nook endometriosis page today.

As hard as it may be, try to have a few weeks off the bottle. I had the same, went away for three weeks and it had practically vanished.

You've taken the words right out of my mouth. I use a hot water bottle to relieve the pain and for comfort and I'm devastated about these marks. I'd been wondering what they were but I lost weight last year and put it down to stretch marks that would fade - they haven't! This is the disease that keeps on giving!!

I hear you - I really do.

I had this prior to my op, when the hotter the bottle the better the relief! I was so worried that I had permanently scarred myself, but they have gone away - it took about two months though! I now still use one during TOTM but wrap it in a towel and have it over clothes to try reduce any redness. I felt the same as you, was so gutted that the one comforting thing was then adding to my stress! take care xx
