Fodmap?

Has anyone tried the fodmap diet and had any success? Weight loss / pain management?

My pt is starting me on it and I’m excited to try and get rid of the pain and swelling but obviously know it’s not going to 100% help with pain but I’m desperate not to be living on painkillers

Yes, I've followed the FODMAP diet. It was before I had a diagnosis of endo. I had a lap 2 years ago but no endo was found. I was discharged with a diagnosis of IBS so I did all the recommended things for it. I found a nutritionist and followed the diet to the letter for several months but it made no difference in my symptoms. I then eliminated other foods and for a while was living off lean meat and a very restricted group of vegetables. I did all of this for about 8 months in total and had no benefit. I did lose a lot of weight but at that time, I did not need to and ended up under weight.

I don't think this helped me because I don't think I have IBS. The only gastro related symptoms I have is pain when need bm, lots of abdominal pain and swelling, which I think is due to endo. My actual digestion itself is very good and regular. After years of looking at my diet, I don't think I react to any foods. I did a gut healing diet many years ago which I think was amazing for my gut health.

If you do feel you have ibs and that you react to certain foods, I would strongly suggest getting help from a good nutritionist (I don't think mine was experienced enough) . I would be cautious about any restrictive diet especially if you have any eating related issues. Following this diet messed up my head for a while. I started to view very healthy foods as 'bad'. It's definitely not a route to take for weight loss alone.

Sorry if I'm a little negative. I have quite sceptical views about IBS itself and doctors recommending a restrictive diet without actually knowing what the underlying illness is.

Aww thanks and I’m under a nutritionist that I’m paying for , I have pcos , endo and ibs I have intolerance to meat and dairy and I’ve done a test where gluten is also something I’m intolerant of so I’m hoping the fodmap will help it’s only for 12 weeks xx

I tried the Fodmap when I was still in the process of being diagnosed and they thought the problem might be my bowel. It’s quite restrictive and I followed it for 8 weeks religiously, I lost over a stone and it helped with bloating. It didn’t help with pain but I did have more energy and feel less fatigued and my bowel symptoms improved
