Hi vickybs4,

You should be absolutely fine to do exercise classes and swimming BEFORE your op - unless your GP/consultant has told you otherwise. However, according to the NHS website recovery time after a hysterectomy is 6-8 weeks. The day after your operation you'll be encouraged to go for a short walk to help your blood to flow normally and a physiotherapist may show you how to do some exercises to help your mobility.

The NHS website says the following: "It takes about six to eight weeks to fully recover after having an abdominal hysterectomy. Recovery times are often shorter after a vaginal or laparoscopic hysterectomy. During this time, you should rest as much as possible and not lift anything heavy, such as bags of shopping. Your abdominal muscles and the surrounding tissues need time to heal."

Where exercise is concerned they state: "After a hysterectomy, the hospital where you were treated should give you information and advice about suitable forms of exercise while you recover. Walking is always recommended, and you can swim after your wounds have healed. Don't try to do too much, because you'll probably feel more tired than usual. Don't lift any heavy objects during your recovery period. If you have to lift light objects, make sure your knees are bent and your back is straight."

Hope this helps and the very best for you op; I hope it goes well and you have a successful recovery!

Hello

I had hysterectomy at 26 in an attempt to ‘cure’ endo... you can do whatever you like before the op... you won’t be swimming for a long while after it though. It is SO important to listen to what they say. Even lifting a kettle can put you back in hospital. I was home on day 4 and mopping on day 6 and driving 3 weeks later. I’m now 6 years post op and still have nothing but trouble with my scar and pain. Please please take it easy. Get someone in everyday to help you out for at least 4 weeks... even if you feel better! I can’t stress enough how painful it is to pull your scar! I learnt the hard way. Just have a couple of little walks around the house over 4 weeks. Stairs are tricky at first as they pull, so stick to just doing stairs at bedtime. Hope it works for you. All the best x

I am 8 weeks post op 42 years old, Full total hysterectomy.answer too you question is you won't be able too no. I was a regular gym member before. You really can't do much for the first few weeks as you need too rest. It is very important too walk around as much as possible. After 4 weeks it gets easier and I set myself a target of walking 10.000 steps a day and I have not put any weight on. Look into healthy diets after hysterectomy, I stuck too a good diet the whole way through and that really helps. Swimming after scar has healed is fine. Treadmill and walking is fine. After the first week I did not nap in the afternoons and that helps too sleep better at night. Listen too your body because everyone is different. One thing I can say is I am endo pain free after over 20 years of pain. So far so good. It isn't an easy process. Any more questions please ask?? I wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted???

This is a question for your doctor...but I suspect the answer is no. Painkillers mask the pain, so you could end up doing serious damage, if you do too much too soon.

Best of luck with the op. Xx
