Having had a hysterectomy with removal of ovaries, I can only say that if you are being told keeping your ovaries is a possibility, I personally would opt to keep them. Ovarian cancer is rare and having an oophorectomy causes long term health problems such as osteoporosis and heart disease. I had mine removed as I had extensive bowel disease, endometriomas on both sides and my fallopian tubes were damaged. My consultant said that removal of ovaries was the best decision in my case as stats show that the endometriosis is less likely to return if ovaries are removed and I needed to minimise the chance of needing further bowel surgery. It was basically a choice of oophorectomy or bowel resection and colostomy. I am only 39 so a long way off menopause and I feel the loss of my ovaries every single day, even with HRT. But in the end it's a very personal decision and it's about managing risk and what you feel comfortable with.
Hi I'm 42. I did a zoladex trial to decide the oopherectomy question. My ovaries are healthy. I have Recto vaginal Endo which was in the form of a 3 cm nodule attaching said two organs along with patches on bladder and peritoneum around ovaries. I had a small ovarian cyst treated at diagnosis.
I had a very negative reaction to the Zoladex unfortunately it caused me lots of neurological and cognitive side effects to the point where I couldn't function.
That combined with the long term risks of oopherectomy ( heart attack, cancer, dementia etc) , the thinking around Endo being able to self generate oestrogen and an more emotional / instinctive reluctance to attack a healthy organ rather than the Endo disease itself led me to go for the bowel op and leave the ovaries. Only time will tell if I made the right call on the ovary front but I am glad I had the excision op to get the nodule out as it was close to penetrating through and I narrowly escaped a resection.
