Excision or Ablation-whats better?

Hi, has anyone had both ablation removal of endo and excision? Was one better than the other?

Welcome any experience or advice. I've had two laparoscopic procedures with diathermy before but its come back after couple of years each time. Now I have the option to have excision procedure and wondered if that would be better.

Excision surgery is the best. I'll just copy and paste some info explaining the differences:

Excision – removing the entire lesion by cutting a margin of healthy flesh around the lesion – see the graphic above, scooping the healthy soil around the flower to get the roots, and then some.

Ablation – destroying the lesion by burning the surface away. Like freezing off a mole or wart, but burning away the Endo. The graphic above with the flamethrower may leave the roots of the lesion, and unhealthy Endometriosis tissue, behind.

excision, 100%

I had ablation first, it came back rather quickly, excision second, hasn't come back.

My last surgeon explained it this way to me, with ablation you are just cutting the head of the flower off, the seed is still there to grow back. With excison, you take away the flower and the seed.

Hope this helps! Xx

I had excision with a BSGE specialist and team of surgeons. 5 hours worth of excising. Come straight back. Ive also read theres no difference between the two, as rerurn rate is just the same! Surgery isnt a cure. Some people will get off lightly but in the majority of people it returns again. Thats why endo is considered to have no cure. Im not saying this to put you off, by all means if theyve offered excision try it! But there is a risk it can come right back. I read this site before my excision and was lead to believe that i would be cured! I was so disappointed when i wasnt!

While it is truth that there is no cure for endo, current research does suggest that reoccurrence rates are lower with excision and that many women do have more positive outcomes with this type of treatment.

As someone who has had both forms of treatment I would certainly recommend excision over ablation. In fact I wish I had never had my first surgery with ablation as there was damage done to my ovaries and much of the disease was left untreated because the surgeon didn't have the necessary skill to deal with it.

I would say do your research, find a good excision specialist to do your surgery. I found recommendations on groups like Facebook's EndoMetropolis helpful.

Good luck to you x
