Hi ladies,

I've just answered a post and suddenly realised I'm not sure myself,

When I get my laparoscopy with the bsge specialist will there automatically be a biwel s surgeon present, or is that only when something has been detected on bowel. ????

Hi, I'm having a lap at a bsge centre and definitely have endo on my bowel. My consultant said that I may need two stage surgery and so for the first lap they will drain cysts etc but won't have a bowel surgeon, but there will be one on call in the event that there's a problem. They suggested that bowel surgery might be done at the second stage. It may be worth emailing your endo nurse and asking how it works at your centre?

Hi Hun if they know that the bowel is involved there will be a bowel surgeon there. But this has to be arranged prior to lap.

Thanks girls, there is no evidence that it is on bowel, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is, so if it is I will need another op, is that same for bladder then, xx

I dont know if this is related, but im having a transvaginal ultrasound before surgery as the specialisit reckons that can give a clearer picture of the extent of the endometriosis in that region.

That would depend on the experience of the sonographer and the extent of endo. Only deep penetrating endo and cystic endo(endometrioma) normally show up on any form of ultrasound.

Ah I see, i have suspected deep, infiltrating endo so thats why im having the transvaginal ultrasound I guess. But nothing has ever shown up on a 'normal' ultrasound.

Transvaginal ultrasound does give a clearer and more detailed image but it still depends on the sonographer. Unfortunately a lap is still the best way of determining the extent of disease.

The specialist I saw was so convinced I had it he said there's no point even having a diagnostic lap so I'm having operation to have it excised. But he was with the endo centre so knew what he was talking about. It seems transvaginal ultrasound is only really good at seeing endo in the pouch of douglas and thats it.

When you say there is no evidence do you mean from scans or symptoms? My consultant specifically told me there would be bowel surgeon there as he suspects bowel involvement but thats from my symptoms. Maybe you could phone up and double check. If your symptoms indicate bowel involvement and you're with an endo clinic then you should have bowel surgeon there too.
