Hi all. I was wanting to know wat people thought of getting the coil? Is it used to ease pain? When would it be suggested to you? In wat circumstances?? I don't know anyone who has one so any advice is welcome xx
Coil??: Hi all. I was wanting to know wat... - Endometriosis UK
Coil??
I've got the mirena and it's been a godsend.
They usually only fit it if you've had a baby first, think it's to do with your cervix.
My uterus is retroverted so I had to have a dr put it in, but it wasn't bad at all (although think my threshold has increased with all the pain endo has caused!)
I had very mild cramps for a day but nothing exiting.
The first few months I had pain during ovulation so was going to have the depo but I held off and the pain settled down.
I've had 3 light bleeds but I've had it in since July 2014.
I couldn't have the combined pill because of migraines, and I bled through the mini pill which was no good as I'm anaemic.
I know other people have had bad experiences, but based on mine I would recommend it to anyone xx
I too found the mirena coil a wonder. However there are many different results on here from different people.
Even if it works well for you - and you might need to give it several months to settle down - I think it also depends a lot on your current circumstances, eg if you want to have children, soon, or not. The mirena usually stays in for 5 years, and if they work for you, that gives you a great rest, plus you can have another after the 5 years. However, it might be worth having a full assessment of exactly where you are right now, with your endo - and in your life cycle. If endo is bad, it might be worth having it assessed and then removed at one of the specialist endo centres, before a mirena is fitted, as the endo can stay subdued but still there while you have the mirena, but then spring up again once the coil is removed.
NB the Mirena has a progesterone (-substitute) only, with no oestrogen. I think some birth control coils have oestrogen, which causes the endo problems.
Look at posts on here by 'Lindle' for more endo and endo cente info, and check other links to posts on the mirena (see list at top right of page) to see how others have responded - they don't work for many, but for me it was brilliant.
I had my coil fitted during my laparoscopy in January, and my consultant and I decided on it because I was on the pill but kept getting large endometriomas (blood filled cysts). So the coil was the next option for me.
I haven't had a baby, and the coil isn't just for people that have had a baby. If you haven't had a baby your cervix will be narrower, but you can discuss insertion with your doctor, I know some ladies have it under anesthetic.
Afterwards I had some cramping (plus I was recovering from my op) and was bleeding for about a month afterwards, and gradually the bleed became lighter. I have also had one period, this was 2 months ago. And now I have had it in for 12 weeks and I have no bleeding, and haven't had another period at all.
It had definitely helped with my pain, but it will take 3 to 6 months to settle down. And there were times when I wanted to take it out, but now I am glad I have it. So be prepared for those first few months!
