Is there a UK endo surgeons success rate guide?

Is there a UK endo surgeons success rate guide? I think America have one and I'm trying to decide on UK surgeons as I have Stage 4 Endo, which needs highly-specialised delicate surgery. Thanks!

Hi Sally, I've just found this from one of the other posts on here. Check it out: bsge.org.uk/endometriosis-c...

Yes. These are all the bsge accredited centers but some are better than others so it pays to ask around. You can not actually discuss the effectiveness of individual surgeons in this open forum but people can private message you with their experiences.

Good to know! Thanks Sally. It's so difficult isn't it.

I have joined this group on facebook called endometropolis which is great because in the file section in the group there is lots of information about what questions to ask prospective surgeons and you can ask people their experiences of particular surgeons.

Thanks Sally, I'll check that out. I've also just joined Nancy's Nook Endometriosis discussion and education, they too have many files and one in particular on recommended surgeons. None in London though so I'll check Endmetropolis out too in case they mention some Londoners.

I find endometropolis more UK focused personally, they have UK specific files too and lots of active UK members.

We definitely need access to statistics on surgeons here, they should have to publish them.

Yes. They do have london ones.

Not everyone on the bsge list of reg endo centres does excision (which is what you should be asking for) and not all excisionists are on the list. The Nancy's Nook list is not in my opinion a full list and I am not sure personally regarding at least one of those listed i.e. regarding skill.

Hi, to my knowledge there isn't such a list unfortunately. I think you would be within your rights to ask a prospective surgeon what their personal success rate has been.

I've seen the discussions on endometropolis and they might give you an idea of who might be good. My surgeon did excision at a London hospital and i thought he was very good but he's name hasn't come up in the main discussions they have had (I did find one other post on there from a lady who also had a good experience with him) so I personally think there are other great surgeons beyond those regularly discussed on there.

Not as far as I'm aware. There is some pre-collected outcome data available, but only for a limited supply of (fairly mainstream) specialties. As ever, costs.

eta - I asked my surgeon about his success rate the first time I met him. I do for my pets, so I do for me!

good idea Torin, to ask for their success rate...I will do that from now on.

hi, I've just seen your post as I'm in the process of trying to research endo centres to ask my gp to refer me to. Have you had much success finding what you need? I wish a list did exist. It's difficult to find info on some docs/consultants/surgeons at all!Least the responses above give a good start for Google!x

No there isn't. No independent record of surgeons success rate is kept. Surgeons keep their own but these are not verifiable because the numbers can be massaged, For example a top fertility clinic in London published much higher success rates than others but they sent all their older prospective mums to adifferent centre for IVF and just published the data on the younger ones. Hence they gave the impression that they were far more successful than other fertility clinics when it was enrierly untrue. I think they were taken to court for this in the end. But basically it's the wild west out there. No one has any relaible to checks to assess how effective surgeons are. Can you imagine this is alllowed in the medical field of all fields ?

It's appalling.
