Sorry, I must be annoying younall with all these question, but it's my first operation and I don't know what to expect, so all these questions just pop in my head!!
Okay:
1) can you smoke in the lead up to the surgery? (If anyone says no, I might cry because that's when I'lI need one the most hahaha!)
2) what happens during the theatre prep?
3) do they put the canular in your hand before you go up? Or do they put it in when you're up there?
4) does anyone else have the same issue I do? I have no veins in my hand!!! (Well, I do obviously, but they're not very visible!!) Do they put the canular elsewhere? llike your arm or something?
5) do you have antibiotics after the surgery?
6) in my hospital, they do not let your partner stay with you whilst you are waiting, if anyone else had this problem, was your partner allowed to be there when you woke up?

I'm not sure about the smoking. During the theatre prep a nurse will come and put the IV in your hand when you are next going down to the theatre. I have baby veins hun as in I mean I'm very small and when I have blood taken they use a child's needle as they are so small, and they got a Iv in my hand but yes they can put it in your arm, they will look to see which is the best vein. I think the antibiotics vary some people say they have them as precautions and some don't I didn't have any antibiotics but I got a infection a week after that they gave me antibiotics for. My partner stayed with me and waited in My room when I came back but I was in a private hospital so unsure on that. Do you have a pre op as this would be a good time to ask them specific things about the hospital.x
I had my pre op over the phone, literally 45 mins after I received my letter, so none of these questions were in my head at the time because I was too busy panicking about the fact that I have to have the op lol xx
I was told that my husband couldn't wait as not enough room (in the letter I received). There was about 8 of us on the ward and all of us had someone with us. My husband waited with me for 3.5 hrs before I had to go to theatre.
He then went to get some food and was told to come back in an hour and half to allow for operation and also my time in recovery ward.
I then walked down to theatre and then climbed up onto my bed. They there attached the wires and inserted canular into my hand. The aenethesist struggled to get my vain up so gave my hand a hard whack (leaving quite a nasty bruise). It was fine though.
When I got back from recovery my husband was waiting on the ward for me so had no problem getting back in.
I wasn't given antibiotics, just codeine when I was in recovery and told to take just paracetamol and ibuprofen at home. However, I now think my wound is infected 10 days on so need to call docs tomorrow.
I used gas first before canular was much easier for me as my veins are not visible. I woke up with a drip that had water and antibiotic in to rehydrate and stop infection. My laproscopy went fine just stick up on peppermint tea as wind gets trapped in shoulder blades. I also used hot water bottle on my back for trapped wind. Good luck xx
No you are not allowed to smoke for up to so many hours before your op. I think its like say if ur op is in the morn you will have to have your last one early on the night before. As they specifically ask u and will not do the op if u have had one as it is dangerous. Also my family wasnt allowed to see me until.i had woken up and come round then they called them through to see me x
My partner wasnt allowed in with me but after my surgery they let him come in and sit with me because i was panicking and he was the only person who could calm me down.
I also have bad veins and especially since you can't drink. it took a while but they eventually got a cannula in my hand, this was when i was in the operating room. Try tomake sure your hands are nice and warm, maybe take gloves

Non-smoker so no idea.

In the ward they did blood pressure, weighed me, checked for loose teeth and fillings, talked me through the op, gave me 2 paracetomol with a teeny amount of water, left me to wait to go to theatre. I said I was worried about being sick from the anaesthetic so they said they would add something to prevent this.
In the room before theatre they were lovely and jovial. I had blood pressure taken and some monitor stickers put on me, IV put in, injection into that which relaxed me then they put me out - think I counted backwards but don't remember. The big thing I remember is how less scary it was than I thought and how nice the staff were.

When I got the room outside theatre where they put me out I had a canula put in. Mine went in my upper arm about 2 ins above elbow crease. It was the easiest vein to find as all the others were in hiding because the not drinking before the op dehydrated me. Left a bruise but didn't hurt.

See above! I don't have visible hand veins at the best of times and one elbow crease is far better more prominent than the other!

Husband took me to ward and was told he couldn't stay even though I was upset. All the women were sat in a waiting room. A later arrival had her husband wait for quite a while but he was then sent to the canteen when the boss nurse saw he was there.
After I woke up I asked for a payphone to call home, the nurse called my husband and told him to come in an hour to get me. I came to from the anaesthetic really quickly and was so chatty when I arrived back at the ward they couldn't believe I had been under hence how quickly I was to be picked up.
The husband from the canteen kept popping back until his wife was back and then was allowed to sit with her after they checked that nobody else in the ward objected to a man being present. I was annoyed they got different treatment to me but OK with him being on the ward.
