I have had the mirena for 2 months now, is it meant to stop period pain? As now my pains changed, and are more intense? And come and go throughout the month, no pattern yet. Any info would help thanks :)

Hi Olivia21,

It can take a good 3-6 months to settle down, and everyone will be different on the Mirena. I have had it for a good 5 years now and it took months to settle but I now dont have periods (its amazing) and dont have period pains. I do get some symptoms though like some bloating, painful boobs and the like but only for a couple of days and thats it! I was also able to loose 3 stone once this was fitted, I couldnt lose any weight at all (kept putting it on in fact) with the pill and inplant.

Stick with it but if it doesnt get better I would always say go back to you doc :) x

It can only stop the pain once it has stopped the bleeding. It's the bleeding that causes the pain, and takes on average 4-6 months of thinning the menstrual lining to the point where it stops periods. Well worth putting up with the settling in stage as I call it, because once it does the job and stops periods, pain and PMT too, wow it transforms your life - or at least it did mine and was certainly worth it in the end.

Hang in there, not too long to go then you have up to 5 years period free without taking tablets. It isn't quick fix -it is long term option and provided you can get to the stage of it stopping the periods that's when you realise it was worth the effort.

Thank you so much for the replys. The bleeding has stopped I haven't bled since I've had this put in. The pain comes and goes but directly it starts it stops me immediately with agonising pain :(. Just wondering if it's normal, but of course everybody is affected differently x

Hi, when I had this it felt like my body was trying to expel it. Big cramps. Is it like that? Certain movements set it off, particularly bending forwards. Couldn't do any gardening for a bit.

I have literally just had the mirena fitted a week today. The insertion was horrific and I have had crippling pain every day since. I literally spend most of my day in the bath at the moment and dosed up on high pain meds. I'm really hoping this pain settles down a little soon as the constant pain is horrendous. I've been up since 4am due to the pain.

I definitely cannot go through thus pain daily for 6 months
