I am 17 and I am having my first lap Saturday and I am really nervous. How long do I stay at the hospital after and how long is recovery?

Scared nothing will be found

Scared something will be found and further measures will need to be taken.

Don't get stressed about it if you can help it! I had my first lap a few months ago at 21 and was terrified! I spent a couple hours at hospital speaking to the surgeon, nurses and anaesthetist before being called in. They anaesthetise you and then next thing you know is that you're awake in recovery.

I stayed in about 1-1.5hrs after waking up before I went home. I think they let you leave after eating a biscuit drinking water and going for a wee as long as you feel up to it!

I, like you, was very stressed about what, if anything, would be found. I can assure you it's better to know for sure if anythings there rather than the mental torture of not knowing! I was diagnosed with endometriosis on my right ovary and there was some around my abdominal wall (I think). At the moment I am waiting on my follow up next week to see whether I'll need more surgery to cut the lesions out, since I've been on 6months of Zoladex which seem to have been fairly ineffective.

I hop you get the answers that you're looking for, and I can assure you that it is nowhere near as bad as you think it will be! I was back to work a day and a half after my lap so it's all straightforward!

Good luck hun, and please feel free to ask any questions you may have,

All the best

I had my first lap last Tuesday. Mine was in the afternoon, I was warned I would probably be kept in overnight, and I was. Taken to surgery at 4pm, back in room at 7pm, home the next morning. My big fear was that they would find something sinister, so I was just massively happy when I woke up and found that they had found and done exactly what they had expected to. I had three cysts drained, adhesions divided, a hysteroscopy and my copper IUD replaced with a Mirena.

As for recovery, I was on the sofa Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Back doing stuff around the house over the weekend. Out doing short walks with the dogs from Monday, drove for the first time on Wednesday. If I had a desk job I think I would be going back on Monday (so 2 weeks off), but my job is very physical so I will probably have a full 4 weeks off. I personally didn't experience any dizziness/nausea etc. I stuck to ibuprofen for pain relief, as anything stronger tends to give me horrid side effects, but honestly the pain hasn't been bad at all.

I've been to hospital 3 other times - appendix removal, wisdom tooth removal and when I had my son. The lap was by far the least painful. If/when I have to have another one, I won't be worrying.

Best of luck, try not to worry too much :-)

Hi i had my first one 6 weeks ago. You should only be in hospital the day of the op. Its determined more by how you react to the anaesthetic. I get quite low blood pressure so i was in most of the day but as long as you've eaten and gone to the loo they'll let you go home. If they do find something then you'll have support through out from your consultant. They'll make an appointment to see them and they'll explain everything then and what they can do if any treatment is needed. I'm not sure I've helped but just remember you're not alone. Hope all goes well :-)

I was in first thing then out by the end of the day. My surgeon gave me a sick note for a weeks ‘post op recovery’ but I was still a little soar for a few days more but able to go back to work after a week (office job). Do you have someone going with you? My gyne came to see me a couple of hours afterwards with photos and details of what they found but I was a little too groggy to remember everything he said. If you have a family member with you they can at least take notes or be another pair of ears.

Don’t get stressed about it. It’s really not that bad! Be prepared for when you come home with pain killers, bottle of water near your bed etc.

Hope it all goes well, you’ll be fine.
