Hello everyone, I have been on here a while just lurking in the background but I need some advice please...

Have had Endometriosis for a number of years, usual battle with GP/Gyne and finally got a firm diagnosis around 3 years ago, the treatments offered were ablation, mirena coil or Cerazette contraceptive pill, I went from all the usual symptoms to being period and pretty much pain free. Just recently I have started to get nagging pain around what would be my cycle time, the pain lasts for a few days and can keep me awake, but is no where near like the pain I used to get, BUT I am scared that it will return. I went to see a Gyne today and he has suggested the Mirena coil instead, but have read mixed things about it. I have a number of health issues a lot stemming from an underactive thyroid, I am 48 and just do not handle pain/change very well anymore. Any advice on whether to stick with the pill for now or try the coil? Many thanks

Hi,

I was diagnosed at 17 (now 30) and was put straight on pill to control pain. After a couple of years I'd have to switch to a different pill as symptoms kept coming back. I repeated this until I pretty much exhausted all the pills I could try. 4 years ago I had the mirena coil fitted and had it for 3 yrs. the first 2 yrs I was fine, the last yr it became very painful when having sex, and periods came back irregularly. Had it removed last summer as wanting to try for family and within 3 month I'm back to how I was all those yrs ago, only worse! I would say if the pain is manageable, stick with the pill until u can no longer. Having the mirena fitted was so painful but I guess it gave me another 2 yrs of relative pain free. Hope this helps a little and good luck :-) xx

Hi Shellbell84, thanks for getting back to mw with this helpful information, but sorry that you have had to suffer to be able to share it with me. Pretty much sounds like that is happening to me then, but being an oldie now I am quite high risk with most pills as we suffer with clots on my Mums side and the one I am on is as safe I suppose they can be. I just have a feeling that the mirena will cause more trouble for me. So like you said its grit your teeth and bear it, its just tough when you already feel like crap with other health issues as well but feel choices are limited.

I wish you all the very best with your health issues...D x
