I had zoladex for the duration of 4 months while the mirena was installed. The mirena went in first then zoladex started the next day or later the same day. Can't quite recall.

Anyway the mirena takes time to settle, to build up a plug of goop (cervical mucus) to hold it in place and stop the lining of the womb growing to shed each month. Once that process is done your periods stop..takes 4-6 months. Meanwhile you may need something else to stop your periods while you wait for the mirena to kick in.

You don't have to take anything, or you may prefer a less dramatic drug like norethisterone with far fewer side effects and no risk of long term ones. That's up to you.

The Prostap aka Lupron is a very powerful superdrug that shuts down the pituitary gland in the brain and as a consequence there a whole heap of possible side effects from that.

So definitely do your homework thoroughly on the drug before decising whether you want it or not.

To have nothing - just means a handful of periods which you would take care of yourself with pain killers. Or BC Pills like norethisterone to stop you having a period.

You don't need both, but it has been offered and it is not a flippant decision to go ahead.

They are cancer drugs - very strong indeed and while you may be lucky and not get too much of a reaction everyone does get some side effects because everyone has a body that relies on all the hormones produced in the pituitary gland to balance body functions, so do your homework - masses of info on this forum - just use the search box on the green bar and type in Prostpa and Lupron and GnRH (which is the type of drug).

Zoladex is another GnRH drug - exact same side effects and risks.

In my own experience it is a waste of time - the drug side effects were awful.

And long lasting long after the drug was stopped I am still suffering from Zoladex.

and in hindsight, I would have been so much better off to have just had the 4 or 5 periods as I had been having those for decades, rather than the long term consequence of loss of short term memory which that drug left me with.

Nor do I - if surgery is in the next 6months then no need at all for mirena. Contact your Gynae to clarify why he wants you on mirena when you are expecting a hysterectomy shortly.

I have had the mirena for 2 years and started decapeptyl injections 4 weeks ago. I asked if I had to get the coil out but my gynaecologist said it would have no effect. However iv not bled at all and symptoms are much better than when I had prostap with livial a few years ago. Don't know if this is related or not but the last time I bled constantly for the initial 6 weeks x

I also have the mirena and started decapepyl monthly injections last Tuesday.

Apart from a slight headache, I've no side effects to report.

Are you still side effect free, dsteve?
