We use a microwave to cook vegetables, and i have CKD stage 3 is this advisable
Have you been given any strict diet rules? I am stage 4, but have no restrictions on vegetables or on the way I can cook them. Do you have a renal nutritionist, if not I am at clinic next week and can ask x
Hi. I have stage 4 and am on restricted potassium diet. I have been advised not to cook vegetables in microwave - always boil them and discard the water - no using it for gravy! Additionally I have been advised to avoid any potato products that have not been boiled/par boiled, ie. chips, jacket potatoes and roast potatoes.Would suggest that you ask to be put in touch with a dietician at your renal unit. As well as being damaging to your kidneys, too much potassium can also affect your heart. Better to be safe than sorry. x
Once you have been diagnosed I would boil all vegetables and discard the water as well as stick to the rule of at least par boiling any potatoes your eating as this will put less strain on your kidneys. So will make a slight difference in the rates they fail at .
I am Stage 5 now . and followed the above rule from stage 3
Thanks Pluto 94
i have spoken to the dietcian she advised against using a microwave best to boil and dipose of water.

Hi Charlestown, The reason for these rules is because of the potassium levels. If you are not potassium restricted then you can cook your vegetables how you have always done. Boiling the vegetables helps potassium to leach out and then if you discard this water and boil again then more potassium is lost. Ask your doctor/dietician if you need to restrict your potassium as it is important to have a normal level for heart health. Microwaving vegetables does not reduce the potassium.
