Stage 3 or 4 CKD.. GFR is 29. What foods should I eat and what foods should I avoid?
See whether your nephrologist is affiliated with a renal nutritionist. Mine is, and Medicare paid for a large percent of the cost of my visit with her. I'm stage 3, and learned what foods to eat and which to avoid. Also, that I could eat a larger variety of food than I originally thought. One book I purchased online is Eating a Pre-Dialysis Kidney Diet - Sodium, Potassium and Fluids by Mathea Ford, R.D./LD. Other members here have recommended cook books, some of which I have bought.
It depends on your potassium level. If raised then a dietician should recommend a low potassium diet e.g. avoiding bananas, tomatoes, chocolate etc. Your renal team should advise based on your potassium level.
Hi, diet isn't much of a factor if the kidneys are going to fail. It's more important afterwards.
Thanks a bunch for the info! =D
Thank you all for your feedback!
Less protein, less glucose, less sodium, less potassium, drinking plenty of water and other liquids without calorie, walking and exercising, controlling diabetes and blood pressure, trying not to have stress and panic, because, if I am not mistaken, sometimes panic and stress may lead to diabetes or blood pressure, a proper diet of food and beverages, preferably, boiled vegetables rather than fried foods, avoiding fast foods and prepared foods in the market, trying not to put on weight etc. I wish you a healthy life.
My husbands eGFR went from 56 to 27 in a matter of months. At that stage he was referred to a nephrologist, prescribed sodium bi-carbonate capsules 2 three times a day and told no need to cut out any food simply all things in moderation. Keep well hydrated seems to be the most important thing. A full blood analysis will show whether any food needs to be avoided or simply reduced, in my husbands case simply a smaller banana with his morning porridge corrected a high potassium level. I would not do anything in haste. A good nephrologist will advise and prescribe. In 3 months my husbands eGFR is now in the 30s all other items of chemical pathology improved and the nephrologist quite happy with that. Keep active, stay confident, kidney function can go up as well as down. Hope this helps. stay in touch. Love Belle
