First appointment with kidney doc since finding out I might have a problem. This is third grf test was 43. I don’t think I like this doc. But I’m going to stay with him until all the blood work comes back and my ultrasound. He told me no more salt. No canned food. But yet drinking to much water isn’t good. I’m so confused so. Any thoughts. I’m so depressed. I feel like the blood pressure meds caused all this.

Attached is a National Kidney Foundation link to eGFR and age. Look back at other eGFR results and good your Doctor is watching it. kidney.org/atoz/content/gfr

Yes, BP meds can cause lower GFR. BP meds caused acute kidney failure. I went from 65 to 44 in a matter of months. Now I am at borderline number, Hopefully your's will come back up too.

Hi Milli I just cut my blood pressure Med in half and am going to try and wean myself off. My ankles were swelling some before this she put me on this medicine with the diuretic. I took it this morning it was 139 over 80. Yesterday lower. I did eat a salty meal last night so I am experimenting to see how this goes. The only reason I went on blood pressure was the stress of my job that I left. So I haven’t been that stressed lately until I went to doctor. Thanks for your reply.

HIButch,Stopping PB meds is very dangerous. You should talk with the doctor to titrate (lower you slowly in a proper manner) or change you to one that is safe for your kidneys. There are many ACRs and ARBs that are actually good for the kidneys that keep your BP down. High BP, and your numbers are high, is MORE dangerous than you think and can cause damage not only to the kidneys but the heart. Please talk to your doctor or find another one who will work with you.

YES very good answer

Totally agree with Bassetmommer

Its really important to keep taking a BP med, and keep the high BP under control. High BP harms the kidneys as I'm sure u know.

Best wishes.

What BP meds are good for cld?

Butchga62 profile image
Butchga62 in reply toKGsrKGsr

triamterene 37.5 But I have asked the doc to put me on Lisinopril to see if maybe it will change my numbers. I think the triamterene has caused some of this. I’ve heard good things about lisinopril. But I guess I will wait and see what the kidney doctor says on April 29.

Sorry KGsrKGsr, i don't know enough to answer that. Have a look at Bassetmommer's reply above and the interesting link attached. Its informative. Or put up a new post which i'm sure someone who knows the answer will reply.

Best wishes.

You CAN NOT as you say wean yourself off you bp meds. You got 139 over 80 and you just started to "wean". That is too high. You were put on BP meds for a reason. The bp med the doctor put you on was not right for you. This happens all the time. I can't even remember the exact number of different combinations I tried with my doctor before we finally hit up a great combination at a great dosage that has worked well for me for a very long time. There ARE diuretics that are okay for CKD, but not the one you are on. If you were getting to swell it could be for a number of reasons not even related to blood pressure. So, you have 3 problems. Some swelling, and an increase in BP., a lower egfr. The BP needs to be addressed, not ignored, not stopping meds without medical direction. this could be a cause also of your kidney problems. Is sounds like you need to change meds. Once you get your bp under control, which really should not be that difficult because while 139/80 is high, it is not ridiculously high. Get that to the lower 130's over mid to lower 70s and you will be fine. And then see if you have swelling. And then see what happens with your egfr.

As far a no salt, no can food, etc. In our society this is near impossible. BUT what my doctors tell me is to address it differently, rather than the word "NO". Everything we buy has a label on it which reflects the amount and percentage of nutrients in the food item. For eample a canned vegetable may say it is 5% of your sodium (solt), or 2% of your protein, etc. Just keep track of the salt intake, using that label, and at the end of each day see if you stayed in/around the 100% mark maximum. Do this for salt, potassium, protein, especially. When possible buy canned goods that say "no salt added".

Your doctors direction to not drink too much fluids (water) is too help reducing the swelling. A lot of CKD patients are told to drink a lot of water, but more and more recent studies are finding this does NOT really improve kidney function. It may produce better creatinine measurements and therefore better egfr, but it is false reading of actual kidney function. It is becoming more common to measure kidney function like we do cholesterol, with fasting blood work.

You are not happy with your doctor, and this happens. So why stick with her. Get another professional opinion but don't self medicate (or stop medicating).

Thank u. I am actually not feeling well so I may have to go back on it to see where I am at when all the tests come in. I will see him in three weeks and perhaps he will put me on a different one. Thank you for reaching out as I am very confused to what is going on. Drink or not to drink. Everything I eat probably contains salt? I am one that has to follow a diet written down. Any suggestions?

Why did you assume that the medications damaged your kidneys? More kidneys are damaged by high blood pressure than by medications for high blood pressure. Do not even try to go off of blood pressure medications unless your blood pressure is 120/70 or lower. Furthermore, it is very clear from what you have said that you do not eat a healthy diet. You need to do the research and learn to eat better, much better. Don't expect that someone on a site like this is going to spend their time writing down an exact diet for you. You would not follow it anyway. The internet is awash with information about how to eat for good health and how to protect you kidneys.

Thank you. I wouldn’t expect anyone to write down anything for me :) I am just a gasp that I e only had high blood pressure for 5 months and it’s caused this after taking this medicine. But you may be right, however I want know anything for sure until three weeks. Thanks for your reply. 😀

Go to a nutritionist soon and get some teaching about foods to eat and not eat for kidneys diet. Stay away from high Potasium and high phrosprous foods .. potato, chocolate, bananas, dark leafy greens like spinach and kale , tomatoes 🍅 , melons like canalope., so on.... eat low salt ( watch pre- packaged foods ) read labels. Low sugar pre- diabetes and diabetes is very hard on kidneys .

Go to Divita kidney care .

They have a list of top good foods for kidneys diet .

Hi Gail :-) Keep in mind that five month’s may be when you were diagnosed with high blood pressure, but it’s likely you have had it much longer. There is a learning curve on this information just like most subjects, so the more you read the more you’ll understand. One day, it may just come together and make sense enough to put you in the driver’s seat! But it takes time and patience I suppose, along with a lot of humility. I hate not knowing stuff so it can frustrate me. Asking questions here is always helpful and we all learn new info. Best to you and nutritionists can be so helpful.

Filtered water like from a Pur pitcher is good . But yes you can drink too much . Really most people do not drink too much they drink too little water .

Ask your doctor as some BP pills ate protective of the kidneys .

Do not drink a bunch of bottled water as it is full of micro plastic partials which will clog up the kidneys . I used to drink alot of bottled water before I knew about all the micro partials in bottled water .

I just got a lot of my urine test results back. One that stuck out was urine total protein. It was 12.0 mg/dL. Urine creatinine 192.30 mg/dl. C-reactive protein 1.0 mg. I can drive my self crazy looking up on internet. But I believe Rick was right about the blood pressure medicine causing all of this to a point. I did not mention over the years I would breakout with an uncontrollable itching. I thought it was nerves. Could have been early kidney problems. Other than that all bloodwork is normal. I do not know how to process all of this. Too much water not enough. Diuretic pulling off water leaving me dehydrated. I am so confused. But thanks to everyone who have kindly responded. ❤️

Hi Again, The C reactive protein is not a measure of kidney function, and that level is not bad for that measurement. webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/c-r...

The other result your doctor can explain to you when you see them. Make sure you ask. If you are not feeling well. It probably is your body not happy with you getting off the BP meds abruptly. I would suggest you start taking them again until you see the doctor. Highly recommend. But also make sure you insist that the doc change the prescription. Too bad you cannot move the appointment up.

Your question about salt.... simply learn to read labels. If it is processed, canned, frozen or manufactured like salad dressing, it has a lot of salt in it. If you eat something salty, you are fighting against the BP meds and will bloat. Just stop eating that stuff. Stick to veggies, unprocessed meat, chicken with no additives, fish (in small doses) pasta and rice (with no salt added) and do not add salt to your cooking or your table food. Stay away from potato chips and crackers and pretzels. You will be surprised what a difference those small changes will make.
