Is it possible for a CKD patient to take part in intermittent fasting and a low protein diet?

HI Elurhmae,

It depends. What stage are you? For someone who is stage 4 or 5, it is not a good idea. One or two, I would check with your doctor. Why are you interested? is it to lose weight? there are better more healthy ways than to do prolonged starvation periods. Also, they are finding with females that it can change you hormone levels and you do not want to mess with that.

I was fasting from 7p to 11 a everyday. But I found that by not having something small for breakfast, like a certain breakfast bar, I was a bear by 11a. My blood sugar was dropping way too low. So I rarely go without a small nosh around 8 or 9a. I am not a big breakfast person.

I asked my dietician and she said going without food for a day is terrible for CKD patients, at least at my stage. Too much stress on the body.

Whatever you do, make sure you stay hydrated.

Are you asking about fasting for medical tests? I am CKD level 3. I do fast for 1+ days for a colonoscopy. My Gastro Doctor is aware of my CKD.
