Protien drink

Good morning, I find these questions and answers so helpful.. I am in stage 3 with a GFR of 46. I am also an active 80 yr. old. I have started taking protein drinks, are they bad for CKD? I was told they are good for losing weight and maintaining it. Over the last 2 years I have lost 38 lbs. now i want to maintain it. Concerned about the protein drink and my CKD.

Hi Goodnature,

You should see if you can visit a renal dietician. They will determine how much protein is good for you. In most cases, we consume too much and it is harmful to the kidney. Is there another option for you other than something high in protein? Also, is this your only source of protein or do you consume meat? My dietician said between 50 and 60 but less than 70. I do not eat meat at all, very little chicken and no fish. I still easily consume that much protein just with what I do eat which is mostly veggies and carbs.
