Dietary Advice Please

Hi I'm concerned about what I should eat to try and stay at CKD3a. I eat a plant-based whole foods diet (vegetarian/vegan) which includes daily beans, nuts and seeds. Having read a fair bit about diet and CKD I wonder whether I should limit my protein? Also are whole grains worse for CKD than refined versions (e.g. Rice, bread)

I believe that only animal protein is of concern. I am in stage 3b. My renal nutritionist advised me to incorporate eggs in many meals. I believe I've read that whole grains should be eliminated or reduced. My medical insurance paid for part of my consultation with the renal nutritionist recommended by my nephrologist. I am not a medical professional.

Thanks jaykay. I agree with you . I read that plant protein is more friendly to kidneys. Whereabouts in the world are you? I'm in the UK and am finding it difficult to find a renal nutritionist.

Originally from New York City, I live in North Central Florida. It is not near Disney World and -- fortunately -- has no attractions like that. A nearby area calls itself Horse Capitol of the World because many thoroughbred horses are bred and trained here. You can get plenty of nutritional guidance here and from sources people here recommend.

Maybe find an expert renal nutritionist who might do a Skype consultation?

Hi New starter,

I'm not a professional but conversations with my GP have lead me to improve my GFR by 5 points in a year.

I avoid;

Red meat and pork, fresh chicken is not so bad..

processed meats (hams bacon etc due to salt content) this includes peperoni and salami, these are also on pizza so think where you encounter these!

All processed ready meals and fast food(high salt content)

Potatoes (high potasium, allegedly affects blood pressure) if i do have them i soak in water overnight to leech the potasium out of them.

Bananas (potasium)

Raisins,

Nuts (especially salted)

Yogurt

Alcahol

Coffee/Teas especially cafinated.

Ketchup (high sugar)

Energy drinks and Cokes (high sugar)

Saturated fats and sugars (biscuits and crackers)

NSAID type pain killers such as ibuprofen...

All high fibre foods as these take longer to digest and hold BP higher whilst digesting.

Keep animal protien intake to 60g per day, eat vegtarian, freshly prepared foods are a must. dont add salt

When i have a heavy meal (Big or hard to digest) i have a warm apple cider vinegar drink (diluted)as this allegedly aids digestion and it seems to work for me. The most important thing is to keep calm avoid stress and keep your BP down. Lose weight and exercise lightly. Drink lots of water (1.5 - 2ltrs per day) and ensure you buy bottled water but watch the mineral content (sodium and potassium are in bottled waters).

Seek medical advice or discuss with a professional, as i said i am doing well but not a professional!

Good luck!

Hi CDH1. Great to hear you are having success and thank you so much for your reply. Plenty for me to consider. Will definitely try the apple cider vinegar. currently controlling my stress levels with meditation.( only 10 mins twice a day ). Thanks again.
