HI,

Has your nephrologist gone over what to expect? At the function level of 9%, I would expect you to need dialysis soon. Did they get you hooked up to get a fistula? Do you know what center you would go to and have you visited them? Do you understand the choices of dialysis? Are you on a transplant list? None of us can tell you when because there are many factors included in that decision. Some people maintain without dialysis at this level for a while. Others need to start dialysis. It all depends.

Has anyone reviewed with you a renal diet and what you can and cannot eat? You may be able to delay dialysis with diet but it would depend on many factors including any other conditions you might have.

I am concerned that you seem to be lacking in support if at this stage.

Hello there,

Welcome to our supportive community. I can see you have had a good response from Bassetmommer. You really need to be having this conversation with your nephrologist and renal team, as they should be providing you with ongoing support and discussing your options. Dialysis and/or kidney transplantation would be the options if you are in Stage 5 CKD with less than 10% kidney function. Here are some links to more information:

Kidney Research UK - Stages of kidney disease: kidneyresearchuk.org/health...

Edinburgh Renal Unit - chronic renal failure: edren.org/ren/edren-info/ck...

Kidney Care UK: kidneycareuk.org/about-kidn...

Talking to a renal dietician would be helpful, as you still need to be maintaining a healthy diet to protect your kidneys as far as possible, which will include reducing sodium, not eating excessive amounts of protein, etc. Also, you should be on medication to control your blood pressure. Again check out the information above which will more fully explain things for you to consider.

Keep in touch and let us know how you are doing.

Best wishes,

MAS Nurse and Moderator

Read Rod Hull's book "Stopping Kidney Disease" - it's an amazing book and many people have improved their kidney function dramatically (including me) after following the advice/info. It's available on Amazon.

I had neckline dialysis then opted for pd dialysis at first doing manual then got a machine and do over night which gives me much more freedom also holidays if on a stay holiday machine goes along with me and fluids are sent to destination I’ve been on cruises where I do manual and fluids are delivered to ship can’t take machine as if it goes wrong I’m out of reach for maintenance all explained to you and everything works for me but insurance rises for travel especially out of Europe

Each person is different. It depends on your numbers and how you’re feeling. I’ve been at GFR 8 over a year now and I’m not on dialysis. I have been end stage over 4 years as far as I know. . Prayers for you. With God, all things are possible 😀
