Iv had my blood tests back recently.my gfr has been falling since December..currently 14.iv been now told I have early secondary hyperparathyriodism which is really scaring me.the level taken at the end of March was 264ng/L.i have been having pain in my upper right arm for a few months.thought it was due to a sprain..i now read this can be a symptom of this condition and can effect the bones.this has only been brought to my attention now..im seeing my gp in a few weeks..should I see someone earlier?my consultant just says see him in 3 mths.he has asked me to raise Alfacalidol to 0.5 mcg..My calcium level is 2.35 mmol/L,phosphate is 1.3 mmol/L.
Does anyone have experience with this problem and if it can be treated?
Many thanks

Hello. When I was first diagnosed with hyper-parathyroidism diagnosed by my endocrinologist., I had ﹰMetabolic ﹰSyndrome, ﹰInsulin ﹰResistance, and ﹰﹰCKD, stage 3b. I was put on vitamin D, Calcium, and it corrected itself and I've not had problems with my parathyroid glands since.
Thank you for your reply..i have been told to increase alphacalidol which is vit d.it does seem to make much difference as my right upper arm pain is pretty bad..im just wondering if this symtom has been left too long and damage has been done.very scared.i also get pins &needles in my hand in the middle of the night.iv read this can be caused when the kidney function is at a low level..will try and see my dr soon.
Have you checked your vitamin D level? PTH and Vitamin D are often linked. PTH is known to go up when vitamin D goes down. This can be addressed by taking over the counter vitamin D of course as recommended by your Nephrologist. All the best!
Hi there..thanks for getting back to me..im taking vit d and calcium.the pain in my arm just below shoulder is getting very painful.i called my renal nurse.she said it could be a sprain but it certainly doesn't feel like it..i also have pins and needles.i feel helpless as I just dont know what I can do to relieve this pain or get it treated..this all seems to be symptoms of high PTH..
