I have just had a blood test for a pituitary tumour (under contol) when my doctor said my blood test for kidney function was below 50.

As I do not have high blood pressure or diabetes he is referring me to a kidney specialist. Apart from feeling really tired all the time I have no other symptoms. Should I be worried?

Worrying certainly won't help you - mentally, or physically! But I understand your anxiety.

Your predicament is tempered by your age; I saw a Nephrology consultant who said that kidney function decreases with age; certainly, you need to ask - don't be scared to pester your GP and local hospital renal unit - you will unfortunately need to do so, if you are to get any help or advice. As to how much less than 50% kidney function you have is something you don't go into; but real problems start when you are at 10% - 15% level. Watch your blood pressure - high blood pressure is a common factor with bad Kidney function; the trouble is, there are so many contributing an intertwined factors - the kidneys (I now know) are important in so many aspects of bodily "maintenance"..............

Thanks, I'm 48 and my blood pressure is normal. Dont know how far below 50 the kidney function was as the doctor didnt say and as I hadnt known anything about kidneys before this had not known what to ask. It was all rather a shock.

Can't add much to what michel said 'cept to write down all your queries before you go and go through them with the specialist when you get there. Best of luck with it all xx
