I am new to this forum. I have been diagnosed as type 2 for about 3 years now and taking Metformin twice a day. I have recently been using a meter to monitor my blood sugar and shocked to find my levels have been around 15 mmol before meals and now looking for a diet to get my diabetes under control. I would welcome any advice in this area.

Have you asked your doctor about counting carbs for each meal and snack? Did the doctor say anything about eating a low carb high protein diet? How many carbs do you have for each meal/snack?
Terry same here not much help at first visit to diabetic nurse . Just go light on carbs sugar etc and if you can ( some of us have other health probs ) and excersise is not easy for us . It all helps and if you need something sweet fruit small portions hope that helps and welcome to the forum x🤗🤗😇
Thank you for the reply Matrix, I have been looking at the low carb and low GL diet (patrick holford) it is hard to find a good diet as i am not a lover of fish and veg
Terry, I have been on Metformin for some time and every Endocrinologist I have talked to swears that Metformin is the best medicine out there but alone really doesn’t control blood sugar readings or hasn’t for me. I also am on Toujeo and that has really helped control BS. I also eat low carb and high protein as much as possible. Exercise is the best thing for controlling BS but that is not possible for everyone. Also, try and cut down on snacks if you are big stacker like I am. Good Luck and type 2 diabetes is a major pain in the butt.
Toujeo. An insulin. Not a good idea to control bg. As type 2 diabetics, we are not insulin deficient, but insulin resistant. We have more insulin in our blood than non-Diabetic people. Taking insulin increases ir. More and more insulin is required gradually. Controlling blood glucose is as important as decreasing ir. Diet is the best medicine. Go for lchf with carbs as low as possible. Keto range if you can become carnivorous. You are trying your best, but I'm of the opinion that we should avoid medicines afap. Insulin is the least desired unless compulsary.
I totally know just how you feel Terry , that’s tough for you as that is the mainstay of our diet . I love both myself . Dies your health authority do the course that tells you how to eat for best effect . I’m thinking I might go on that one soon . I do think they don’t give you much info although there are plenty of books on it . Love and hugs 🤗🤗🦋😇
Thank you for your quick reply, i guess I will have to bite the bullet and try and ear veg. Do you know if porridge in the mornings are to carby? I have it with blueberries, i am not a fan of porridge but i am trying look forward to getting to know people here
Blood sugar number 15mmol/l is a very high, that too before meal. After meal it would go further up. Risks of complications are very high with such high number.
Your first port of call should be your Doctor's office for complete diagnosis. Are you sure about the accuracy of home Glucometer? In any case, you should confirm your conditions by lab tests - fasting, 2-hr PP and HbA1c to get a complete picture.
Regarding the diet, lowering the consumption of carbohydrate is the key to managing/controlling blood sugar along with some exercise.
