Hi, I'm after some information if anyone can help, my Dad has type 2 diabetes and has been on medication for approx 5 yrs, today he saw a locum GP who has taken him off the medication due to blood results (something to do with kidneys) but his blood result is 11. Should he just come off medication? Thanks

Any change in medication of this type should be followed up by blood tests after a short period (say two weeks) so I think if that has not been arranged, your dad should ask for this. If there are concerns about kidneys, these should be followed up too. Perhaps another visit to his GP is in order.
Hi paulahawes-1972
Have you contacted the GP to ask for the reasons behind the withdraw of the medication and what the alternatives are? I imagine the blood-test you are referring to is your dad's HbA1c, which will also test the kidneys for albuminuria, which can indicate diabetes related kidney disease. It could be that his current diabetes medication was affecting this and the doctor wants to do some more tests or make a medication change. I think you should phone the surgery and ask for some further advice in understanding their decision. Here are a couple of links that may be helpful
