Staying off alcohol

Hi I have been drinking a bottle of wine nearly every day for around 10 years, from 01st January this year, I decided to give it up if I can do it. It helped that I didn’t feel great at the beginning of January so I didn’t feel like drinking alcohol, and I still I haven’t had any this month, however I do really want a bottle now. I thought it got easier the longer you didn’t drink? I also thought my weight would come off but after 37 days of no alcohol I haven’t lost a pound 😢 so feeling deflated. I am going to a party next weekend and I know I will want wine so any tips can I have some just that night or will it set me back? So depressing

Well done for staying off the booze for as long as you have. Your liver, kidneys and brain can only have benefited.

Temptation will hang above your head and infect your imagination for as long as you keep thinking about it. Already you’re imagining defeat at this forthcoming party.

There are a number of things you could consider: take your own non alcoholic drinks (I haven’t found a decent wine yet but some really delicious beers).

If you get questioned you might say lightly that you’re doing Dry February as there are fewer days , or that you’re on medication, or that you’re driving. I get fed up getting the patronising 3rd degree if I say I’ve stopped drinking. It makes lots of drinkers uncomfortable.

As for weight loss, you’re cutting out 1000 calories a day by stopping the wine. Are you eating more? Could you exercise more? In any case, weight loss would be a by-product not the main aim of stopping.

Good luck if you attend this party.

Well done again.

You’re asking if drinking again might put you back to square one? Maybe…that’s a chance you will have to take if you go to the party and drink. The temptation may be too much if you go. Will it be worth the risk?

Yes, it gets easier to not drink over time, but some things may be needed to change other than just stopping to achieve that easiness. Over thirty days of sobriety is a wonderful start. No doubt. Have patience, though. Some goals aren’t achieved overnight. 🍀

Congratulations on the 37 days : ) long may it continue!

Keep going! It will get easier!

At 37 days you are at a really good stage but putting yourself in 'wet' environments could present challenges at this moment in time (especially if you do end up drinkng).

Maybe waiting just that little longer before going partying may help your sobriety in the long term?

If you do go out be careful and it may be worth planning beforehand : )

Good evening, Thank you for sharing. I am a newly non-alcoholic drinker myself. Congratulations on your 39 days(if i'm adding correctly) !!!!

It's been almost a 30 day's for me, now that I have thought about it!!

Well the thing becomes this. Will going to that party/event set you back with Wine or Alcohol in general (meaning make you shame yourself or mind-f#$%k yourself to giving up on your long strides of sobriety that you have already started to routine)? Will you psyche yourself into drinking?

My advice would be not to go find another person or people to hang with that night that doesn't involve alcohol.

If you do go, take your own non-alcoholic drink and go with someone that will help you stay in check or is willing to leave when you would like to leave. (2people fighting a party is better than one)

Or stay home and do a project or something that really interests you and would get your mind off everything.

As far as the weight. My mother has been on this different meal eating plan and it TRULY IS WORKING!!!!!!. It took her time and being consistent and giving it at least 60 days. She had to focus on not drinking, eating healthier, and working out.

I’m think if you are serious u need to get blasted and then after write all the reasons u want to quit. Put them on a white board and think before u drink. HALT works for me. It stands for:Are you:

- Hungry

- angry

-lonely

- tired.

Think about these before I drink and try and solve these 4 feelings first and then decide
