Hi all - I joined this as I need support in stopping drinking alcohol - I am aware I use it to blunt emotional pain - does this make me an alcoholic? Also, I will do and say things when I've drunk alcohol that I would not do or say sober.....I really don't like myself drunk )-:

I can never say no to an offer of alcohol either

I sympathise with you completely. I can never say no, even though I feel completely ready to stop. There's no support groups in my local area so it's hard to stay focus. But, we're on this website so at least we're bloody trying right!!!?!

Hi, Nicky….people often drink to numb themselves, but not all people who drink are alcoholics. What perked my ears up was that you can’t say no. That is a problem. It’s good that you realize that and even better that you want to do something about it. The best support this planet has to offer is a 12 step program. My 12 step program is AA. Just google AA meetings, etc. If you can’t find an in person group, there are online AA or 12 step meetings. Help is at your fingertips. And of course, in the meantime, reading others posts and talking here can help. By sharing your journey, you’re helping others, too. 😊

Thank you! In tears but in a good way, I’ll take a look at the resources. Sober for 4 days….

That is true. Not all problem drinkers are alcoholic.

First, if you have had some sober time in-between, we need to evaluate how the state of the mind was during those dry time. Was it at ease or was it restless irritable and discontented. You can add other hickups.

Next, if you honestly want to stay stopped you cant. And when drinking you have absolutely have no control over how much you drink then one is probably an alcoholic.

Also important is to see if ran into those strange mental twists/blank spots where we have decided that we are going to stay stopped but somehow ended up drinking? Because that is the key to the beginning of each spree.

hey thanks. Ok in between I’m thinking about creating a scenario in which I have an excuse to drink alcohol. When I start I can’t stop as often lose my memory of what I did and said

That is right. There are people who swear that they went out to get wasted. Then those who have the peculiar mental twist (i will mix whiskey with milk and drink on a heavy stomach, I will only have couple, I will have couple of miller lite beers........) and then your scenario. In the founders Bill Story in the book called alcoholics anoymous, he talks about a situation where someone offered him a drink and he took it. No contemplation, no resistence nothing. We just take it and then the phenomenon of craving kicks in. In all the situations, the mind of the person is the problem.
