Alternatives to Atorvastatin

Hi all, long story short, I was placed on Atorvastatin I. February after a Cardiac Arrest and then a TIA (lucky me). Turns out my cholesterol was 6.9.

I tolerated the drug really well, and my cholesterol came down to 2.35, except it sent my liver into overdrive. My GP told me to stop the statin and have my LFT checked in six weeks.

I had my bloods checked two weeks later (last Monday) for renal function and my liver function has come right down, but my cholesterol had shot up to 5.8. Now since my TIA I have embarked upon a strict Mediterranean diet with absolutely no cheating - so there is absolutely no chance of me controlling my cholesterol with diet - that much is clear having spoken to the community dietician about my results.

My question is, has anyone else suffered this liver issue with their statins (I’m told it’s a common side effect) and what alternatives are out there. I’m going to speak to my gp on Monday but forearmed is forewarned, so to speak.

I just hate the thought of another TIA or even worse full on stroke hanging over my head.

Any help or advice??

My husband has had exactly the same ! Reduced cholesterol with atorvastatin but raised liver results! I don’t know if anyone has an answer but I thought you might feel reassured that it’s so common

I had very poor reactions to Atrova and Rosuva. Severe aches etc. Eventually settled on Pravastatin which I understand is water based and less prone to cause effects. Worth talking to your GP about it. It’s not 100% effect free but maybe more able to cope. Good luck.
