My blood sugar is 254mg/dl after 1 hour of lunch

I had a lunch at 1 pm. It included one bowl (100gm) of white rice, sambar, a small cup of potato fry, another cup of vegetables, and 200ml of buttermilk.

I took metformin 500mg before lunch and went for a 2km walk inside my office. Took a random blood sugar at 2:30 pm and was shocked to see the reading showed 254mg/dl.

I feel bad about that. Even after walking why my sugar level didn't settle?

rely on hba1c value as diabetes is problem of digestion. how sugar metoblises is important. As long as fasting is below 150 and no sugars in urine, nothing much to be worried. Keep hba1c under 7 and stay cool. This is what my doctors said. pricking with glucometer causes unwanted anxiety and tension.

That's true. After seeing the number I felt my efforts are going in vain and indulge in stress eating

Hi secretsubject ,

What were the total carbs. in the lunch? If the total is high, the blood sugar may be higher after the meal for some people.

I track my food on My Net Diary. Based on that insight I have consumed 83gm of carbs, 18gm of protein, and 26gm of fat which sums to 634 cals.

How many carbs. are you allowed for lunch? For me, I can have 50 carbs. at lunch and 75-80 for dinner.

I am not too sure about the numbers. Do you take pills or insulin at night? Your carb is higher at night than day

I use insulin 3-4 times a day depending on how many carbs./what the blood sugar is at the time. I use Novolog for days and Basaglar before bedtime.

Oh okay. I will consult a dietician to understand how much carbs I can consume in a day. I am just 26 :( so doc suggested having only metformin 500. One pill a day and more changes in lifestyle

The Dietician can go over how to count carbs.and the amount for each meal/snack. Good idea.😀

Hi Bala! My humble suggestion:

1. Forget white rice totally;

2. By your name I guess that you must be from South India. You will have access to several Small Grain varieties (Millets). Start consuming millets. The following millets can be cooked like rice and taken with all the South Indian cuisine menu items:

3. Kodo Millet (Varagu), Foxtail (Thinai), Proso (Panivaragu), Little Millet (Samai)

4. You cannot cook Finger (Ragi) Millet, Pearl (Kambu) Millet and Bajra (Cholam)

5. Millets have less Carbs and more Protein.

6. Practice of having the following daily:

7. Small piece of Fresh Ginger (wash and peel the skin) and chew it in the morning on empty stomach;

8. Small piece of Dry Ginger before or after lunch in the afternoon.

Perhaps you are not an Indian - particularly South Indian. Anyway, I will briefly explain as below:

1. Pour 3 Cups of Water into the Electric Rice Cooker;

2. In a vessel, for 1 Cup of Millet, add 2 Cups of Water and cook it in Electric Rice Cooker;

3. After the Electric Rice Cooker comes to "Keep Warm" position, remove the cooking vessel from Cooker and immediately change to another vessel.

4. Now your cooked millet ready. Mix it with any herbal powder by adding Sesame Oil or Coconut Oil or Ghee; or mix it with any vegetable gravy and have it.

5. As explained above, Finger (Ragi) Millet, Pearl (Kambu) Millet and Bajra (Cholam) cannot be cooked this way.

You are right. You forgot to mention about fiber content of millet. I have also tried Barnyard millet and Brown top millet which has max fiber content around 12. Rice has 0.2 and wheat around 2

 secretsubject ,

3 things to note.

1. Once you have any food, the blood sugar spikes between 45-90 minutes (depends on the quantity of carbs, etc.) after the intake. Even for a non-diabetic subject, the spike happens. But it wont be as high as a T2D subject.

2. The quality of food matters. please note that the glycemic index of the usual commercial polished white rice available in the market is around 90s. Glucose is at 100. Also, the oil used in cooking matters as well. The usual commercial oils are mixed with mineral oil and should be avoided at all cost.

3. The quality of all the food that you take matters a lot. Physical activity/exercise is only 10-20 percent of the entire ballgame.

Hello Bala ,

I am a pre diabetic person for last 8 years , and was able to keep myself away from Diabetics type 2 range with only precautions in my diet and well as eating timings. 1.) Reduce your rice or chapati quantity to half and increase the amount of Salad / fruits / vegetables to double (considering the quantity what you are taking at present) . 2.) follow intermittent fasting regularly. If you don’t know about it then please search on google. Basically reduce window of eating time and increase time window for fasting. I am sure it will work for you.

Note: regularly Walking around 10,000 steps per day is must for overall health wellbeing.

Hope it makes some difference in your Glucose readings .😊🙏

Regards .

Rice and potatoes are the culprit. Both are simple carbs. Rice and vegetables with either boiled egg or paneer will combat sugar spikes.
