saw a recent review on 15 years follow up study on DM2,

Reasonable sugar control does reduce the cardiovascular risks in 10year follow up,FBS<140,PPS<150, HBA1c<7

No added benefit noticed in stricter sugar controls over 15years follow up .

My experience too.Been a DM2 since more than two decades and my CV report is just fine.We should not be victims of unnecessary scare mongering.Instead,we should have thorough and up to date knowledge about the disorder, set clear goals and work diligently to achieve them.
