There is limited experience and knowledge on Low carb diet!. WE need small portions of well balanced diet. We have to avoid free and hidden sugar in everything that goes into our mouth.

Their diet is based on their own cultural wisdom and their awareness/insight as to what works for them that was quietly passed down from their respected "seniors" and ancesters over the generations. It's not just food that they eat. It's a whole package.

These are not the results based upon anaysis/research/studies that are "in for now" and "out for tomorrow". They rarely indulge. In essence, they are probably extremely disciplined people, likely driven by their traditional spiritual practice and respect for their seniors/ancestors, abundant nature/their own environment, respecting their own body..that got to be beyond "science" or purely lucky "DNA"! Their "pork" is not supermarket pork. It's known as "black wild variety" that roam in wild: it must have been lost in translation.

Japanese diet is extremely varied and high standard. No supermarkets can begin to match what they have over there. China/Korea also have marvellously diverse food culture, too, based on their tradition, spiritual practice, respect for anscesters/those who passed before them and wisdom within their old traditional food culture. It's not "let's get healthy" pattern of thinking. It's far more than that.

One thing I often notice is that they wouldn't do anything extreme, never overdo things, not overeating, not resorting to harmful habits, not keep shifting gear from one trendy diet to another, pushing themselves beyond limits to shorten their life span.. It's funny that I do read that modern "okinawans" are not the same as older Okinawans after "Western diet" swept across their "paradise".

Younger Okinawans are fat/obese. They might look far more westernised and even looking "healthy". Centenarians seem very, very thin, they don't eat as much fruits as reported; fruits are loaded with fructose, which they know to be highly detrimental. Their doctors are far more strict when it comes to dietary management in senior citizens. It's hard to say, if I would like to live that long whilst looking skeletal. Low protein diet probably has something to do with it.

If your main meals consist of carbs (sweet potatoes) with high dietary fibres and a very small portion of wild/lean proteins, it explains.

We can look at the old and new, it applies to many countries. When I think of my father and grand mother, they both only had one good meal per day. we were given two good meals a day, during school days, lunch at school. The old life style was different, affordability as well, there was ration book to buy food.

In developed world, fast food is the problem. In developing world many problems. In UK, KFC lunch is less than 2 pounds. When you go out to buy lunch there is always a deal, three items for a fixed cost.

The bottom line, it is the responsibility of an individual to take care of day to day healthy living.

Your post explains a lot of things that I too believe i.e moderation, variety in diet and being reasonably active.

I strongly believe in low GI carbohydrates. In fact, almost all the carbs that I eat are low GI. Very little of medium GI and no high GI carbohydrates.

This kind of news may make a flashy headline but is of absolutely of no use. First of all, there is no recommendation of extremely low carb diet for all. Low carb became popular only because it gives good health to people who are suffering from one of the metabolic disorders. The conventional diet which recommends low fat excess carbohydrate promotes obesity, T2D and other metabolic disorders. Since this diet was implemented around 1977 or so, the number people suffering from T2D and obesity have been steadily increasing reaching almost ten times since then. And we are still trying to find virtues of that diet rather than accepting the biggest mistake that was made in the dietary history.

LCHF diet is not new FAD diet, its history dates back to 1862. If you google Banting Diet, you can read how it evolved to present day LCHF/KETO diets.

Carbs do the damage. I have been T1 since 1966 & know a little ? Exercise is good for anyone, I do not sit still long.

If you are T1 , this post has no relevance for you. I personally believe, as a non-professional, that T1 and T2 are distinct and hence have to be managed differently.T1 needs insulin treatment and as little carbs as possible, but most T2 sufferers can manage with diet and lifestyle management.

I have worked ALL my life & NEVER been unemployed, from 3yrs old. Yes I do know a little bit. ThksT1 &T2 are very different. Carbs do the damage in T2

I fully agree with you that carbs cause damage for T2 diabetics if used indiscriminately in terms of quality and quantity. I am 77 years old and have been a diabetic since about 24 yearsI had given up high glycemic foods long ago and now I only eat low glycemic foods with a negligible quantity of medium glycemic foods. My lab reports are very satisfactory and I do not suffer any health complications.I hope you will understand my perspective.

A Short History Of The Low-Carbohydrate Diet:

It started with a 66-year old undertaker in 1862. Weighing 202 pounds at 5'5", William Banting was so overweight that he couldn't tie his own shoelaces. That year, experiencing, among other problems, hearing difficulties, Banting went to an ear, nose and throat surgeon named Dr. William Harvey, who promptly decided that Banting's problem wasn't deafness, it was obesity. His fat was pressing on his inner ear.

So now it is proved that balanced diet is the only answer for healthy life , good longevity and intelligent existence . That's what our forefathers followed . All the good for nothing researches of modern scientists mislead people and contribute to misery and damage our health .

Growing evidence supports idea of switching between low-carb/high-fat diets

Both have benefits, including weight loss and improvement of diabetic markers

Low carb high fat diet leads to decrease in intelligence . That will be proved in course of time .The best works in any field whether it is Arts , Medicine , science , economics , politics , Architecture , philosophy , Mathematics , spirituality ---- any field was produced in the civilizations which had high carb & low fat diets only . High fat is a need where physical strength and prowess is the primary requisite . Modern science and technology is not intelligence in totality as it has caused untold misery and destruction only . In another 10 years humanity is going to total devastation with no food , no water , no pure air , no good medi - care . A science or research which contributes to the health , peace . prosperity and happiness is a real science and which leads to that is real intelligence . Lop sided growth is not intelligence .

I have a concern about high fat diet.A high fat diet is given to epilepsy patients,as an SOP, so that their gut bacteria is altered significantly.Gut bacteria has a role to play as how impulses are transmitted to and from the brain. The changes brought about by high fat diet in the gut bacteria profile helps in regulating the brain impulses and the patients get some relief. If this understanding is true, and I am not sure being a layman, then ,one should take a second look at high fat diet.I will be glad to have clearer knowledge about this.

Sir,the article through interesting but I still belief that LCHF is the best option and total carb from all sources be 100 to 120 grams with moderate proteins and moderate fat with intermitant fasting in between fortnight.

Thanks sir.

First of all we have to understand and accept that diabetes is not a disease but only a disorder . That disorder gets turned in to a problem where it is branded as a disease and treated with unnecessary prescriptions which complicate the issue . Then further medication leads to further complications . Thus the whole issue is complicated where one cant help but depend upon the greedy medical system , which was bribed by the pharma companies for the monetary benefit .The change should come in the eneral public by understanding the trick played by the vested interests . Modern medicine has to be approached in case of medical emergencies and crisis and diseases caused by bacteria , virus , microbes and infection not for a disorder created by faulty eating , sleeping , resting habits . Now once the system gets rotten with faulty practices and reaches a point of no return there is other way out . Then also a correction in life style helps after taking medicines for the problems created by the foolishness . Awell balanced , nutrient diet with 55% carb , 30% protein ,and 15 % fat , consisting of fresh fruits , vegetables , milk and milk products , sufficient for the physical work 6 to 8 hours of sleep per day . happy and contented mental make up assures a healthy life But then how the greed of demonic minds get satiated . The very fact that diet high in fats was designed and created for epileptic patients shows that it is not whole some and healthy . In other words the society .and public are tricked and fooled by a handful of selfish self interested crooked intellectuals .It is high time we wake up and take our health in to our hands . A good start helps people who have not yet reached a critical state . The method of taking the sugar ranges in the blood it self is faulty .I PUT MANY PEOPLE ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY by making them to throw out the gluco meters . The first step is to eat food which is just needed by the body as per its requirements and needs , stop eating junk food .In the good olden days diabetes was not this prevalent because pollution in water , air , food , sound and light were not there .Cell phone radiation ,computer generated radiation , impure air of automobile exhaustion and fumes which is full with lead .mercury ,carbon mono oxide , Arsenic and floride contaminated water , artificial lights , home gadgets , excess use of plastic which damages the contents with nano particles , the list is endless which are all causing various types of cancers , diabetes , epilepsy , seizures , psychosomatic diseases etc . Fortunately in a very short time all that is going to come to an end by the devastation which is going hit the globe .I don't understand the irresponsible attitude of the so called intellectuals , doctors and scientists , research bodies in this regard . Let the future generation at least realise the gravity of the situation .

sandybrown in reply to

Could you please define both in your response, disorder and diabetes. It is imperative that you make it clear. Thanks.

in reply tosandybrown

The problem starts with excess hunger , thirst , weakness , fatigue and a feeling of listlessness. it is disorder . Immediately steps should be taken . Taking low fat dairy products , fiber rich grains , fresh fruits and vegetables , controlling amounts of added sugar and salt with an eye on portion sizes usually checks the problem .At this stage no medication is required .Good rest , sleep , stress free life ensure good health . But when these steps are not taken complications step in . Then it can be called a disease and intake of medicines becomes inevitable . With that stage diabetes the disease becomes a life long fixture . No amount of medication cures it but only controls it .It is a cumulative effect of many wrongs and the problem is with the effects of medicines and wrong food intake, which created and complicated the disease pattern .Right carbs stabilize sugar levels. High carb ,high fiber diet ensures a drop in blood sugar levels. Complex carbs , healthy fats vitamins and minerals are essential for the body .High fat low carb diet is for diseased conditions , High protein low carb food is for animals . Initially low carb diet may give weight loss. But after some time the weight loss levels out. More calories mean more triglycerides which get stored in in fat cells .Animal foods , fast foods , and packaged foods contain saturated fats . Elevated tryglycerides can impair the glycemic control .Food should be appealing to the eyes and taste buds also. sounds and visuals perceived by the unconscious mind create impressions on the self and affect the behaviour , attitude and there by physical and mental health .

sandybrown profile image
sandybrown in reply to

Thank you. OK now you are bring lipid into your discussion therefore you need to explain cholesterol and lipid .

Tryglicride is only 1/5 of total cholesterol in USA units.

in reply tosandybrown

Yes , but any thing cant be taken in isolation . Tryglycerides , cholesterol . Hdl , Ldl , Blood sugar , functioning of gall bladder , liver, heart , lungs , pancreas and other organs- especially brain--- It is a package deal . Modern medicine takes each item separately and individually . But we are forgetting that body is a whole unit and what ever happens in the body and where ever it happens in the body it reflects on other parts . So we have to go for the functioning of all organs specially brain . For that we have to study the functioning of pituitary gland also for its secretions and their effects on health .
