Fasting is not really an option for diabetics. The food one consumes before fasting will be exhausted in about three hours time, but the body needs glucose to to maintain it's basic metabolic rate to keep heart, lungs, kidneys, brain etc to function normally.Since glucose supply is no longer available during fasting, the liver releases glucose from it's reserves.Sometimes, the glucose so released maybe excessive resulting spike in blood sugar levels. Being a diabetic she lacks capacity to tackle that excess sugar in the blood. As a layman,I cannot explain further why that happens. Please use the search function on this web page to access earlier posts on the subject to gain more knowledge.

fasting also gives a rebound increase in blood glucagon whose action antagonizes insulin resulting in higher glucose levels

Going on fasting is not exactly a scientific idea . How can one expect a vehicle to run with out fuel . Fasting works wonders only in case of gluttony . Over fed people have to go on occasional fasts . All others who eat in limit should not go on fast .

Modern science is giving misleading information regarding medicines , diet , and other curative measures as far as autoimmune diseases and connected psychosomatic diseases . In the first instance the medical fraternity is taking care to see that people do not get cured . Once a patient comes to them it is like a lottery prize to them . They get unearned , unethical , undeserved incomes . It is a proved fact . When it is brought to the notice of public , they raise hue and cry . But it is cent percent truth . Until and unless a change comes in their attitude , the menace of auto immune diseases does not disappear from the health scene .why we in India have to follow them with all our thousands of years' superior medical practices .

What you are talking about here I have no clue about because it has nothing at all to do with my question.

Little harsh,don't you think?

in reply toramana42

Harsh ? My opinion? The way people are suffering makes any one to react like that only . To day half the incomes and energies are spent on health issues only .

in reply toramana42

Is that referring to me?

No.What is harsh in your post? Not at all.

in reply to

yes . It is not about your post . My remarks about some doctors are a bit caustic . But they are true . That fact would get revealed when the time comes . Right now my remarks sound pessimistic . i have feed back from many sources , who do not come out in the open.

If you had read my message properly you would have seen that my aunty missed some fasts because of her diabetes in Ramadan. That is the reason she is the reason she is making up for them now if she's able to. Your replies are very very cheeky I must say

My reply is in response to fasting in general irrespective of any cause or reason . Then my comment about modern medical fraternity is a sweeping statement about the state of affairs to day . As per your message her BS levels are high after fasting and my answer is touching that aspect . Whether in the forum or out side the forum , the doctors themselves do not have an answer for that . The standard advice dished out is to go on fasting as much as possible . No two people are alike and no two people react the same way for a given condition .Definitely fasting once in a week can be done . That also now a days is riddled with many problems as there is no sufficient strength in people due to lack of nutrition in our food . Why her sugars are zooming up after fasting if all of their arguments are correct .

Dear SID if your aunt do not have any problem during fasts she must continue to fast. If she is taking some drugs for diabetes she can take her dose immediately after taking her IFTAARI which my consist of some milk and little fruit. She must take drugs as precribed by doctor before taking heavy meals at the time of Iftaar. This will help her avoid blood sugar spikes. I am doing the same during Ramdan and observe full month fast. I also reduce the medicines during Ramzan.

Hi arshid2560 she can't keep the long fasts that's the reason she's making up for them now that the fasts are short. She does the exact same as you do when fasting. Except you can keep the long fasts too.
