Bacterial pneumonia is usually more serious as it causes more severe symptoms. However, viral pneumonia caused by the flu virus can be life-threatening as well if it triggers a particularly severe inflammation of the lungs or is complicated by a secondary bacterial infection.

Pneumococcal vaccination is a method of preventing a specific type of lung infection (pneumonia) that is caused by the pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae) bacterium. There are more than 80 different types of pneumococcus bacteria -- 23 of them covered by the vaccine.

Hence diabetic patients should take pneumococcal vaccination.

I caught Pneumonia a couple of weeks after having the jab for it. My 3yr old son got it from me & we really thought we had lost him. The medical team showed us the xray & one lung full & other 3/4 full. The fantastic team at the Freeman Hosp, Newcastle sorted him but it was a proper bad time for us. He is now 6ft 3 & fit as builders dog !
